life altering

MandyW by MandyW Walking(February 2009) (rank 413th)

yesterday, i was at the end of my rope. i am struggling all on my own, my children's dad stays in another town. its difficult practically raising them on my own and he contributes, but with all the travelling, its not always possible. i was feeling sorry for myself, didnt

know how i was going to get to work today or where my kids' next milk were going to come from. well, a friend borrowed me the money, this is where the tale begins. i went to the mall. a guy approached me. before he could say anything, i told him i'm sorry, but i dont have money. i left the mall, got my sister outside and went back in with her. as we came out, the same guy approached us, both with the same answer. he then said "no, u misunderstood me, i'm not looking for money. i'm so tired, been walking from place to place, looking for a job. do u know where i could go next?" he then told me his wife and 18 month old daughter's name and asked me to pray for them, also asked if he could give his sister in law's number, so i could leave a msg if i hear anything. my heart sank in my shoes. i nearly burst into tears. my heart went out to him and thougt of his wife and daughter. i learned a valuable lesson, that i can teach my kids. dont judge people before you take the time to get to know them. also, there are people far worse off than yourself. if you can bless another person with some of the little you have, the world would be a better place. hope this little story inspired you as much as it did me

Re: life altering

Thanks for the reminder, for ourselves and in teaching our kids values, Mandy! Glad that you didn't miss the opportunity to be an encouragement to this man and his family. You're right, too... when ever we think we're doing it tough, hearing the story of someone who is in a lot worse situation puts it in perspective... and if, in some small way, we are able to help or encourage them, then we are definitely enriched by the experience!

There is an old saying "Never Judge a Book by it's Cover" it is so true and there is always those worse off than ourselves. Even if you can't help money wise...just taking the time out  to LISTEN is enough.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers Janice xxxx

Re: life altering

it is my pleasure. in the area where we stay, there are many people looking for jobs and then there are those u mentioned, the ones looking for handouts, they are more than the genuine ones. it is tough trying to make a living. i'm supposed to be 1 of the fortunate ones, because i have a degree and i work, but it doesnt pay nearly enough. you take any job, just to be able to provide at least something. and i know i am better off than most, that is why i am grateful.

Re: life altering

Wow that's very interesting Mandy, I'd have shed a tear or two myself.  It sounds like you live in a totally different environment than some of us, (having read some of your other posts), it'd be great to hear more about it.  They say that back in the day around here, there were many so-called hobos travelling around looking for work with rucksacks on their backs, sleeping rough and doing anything to earn some money to send home to their families.  I am wondering if it will be a sign of the times again with the current economic situation; or whether most people will be too lazy to put their hand up and hang around for a hand out?  Thanks for sharing this lovely story, it is very poignant.
