I'm writing this advice while it's still fresh - we've just completed our toilet training. I have a 2y3m old boy who is due to become a big brother in the next 3 months. So thinking ahead I wanted to try this with a few months to spare in
case it didn't work - luckily for us it did.
We followed Gina Ford's 7 day intensive toilet training plan, and it worked - I couldn't believe it. I am a big Gina fan, having used her routines for Ryan when he was first born. She is extremely prescriptive (some call her the Baby Nazi) BUT if ,like any advice you take the parts that suit you and throw the rest out, it will work. Just follow the crux of what she's trying to say. She says -
The following signs indicate your toddler may be ready to toilet train -
he should be over 18 months and frequently dry when you get him up from lunch time naps;
he is aware he is doing or has done a poo;
he can understand and follow simple instructions i.e. "put your toy in the box";
he is eager to participate in taking off his own clothes; and
he has the ability to sit still & occupy himself for 5-10 mins with a book or toy.
I think the most important thing to remember is that HE AND YOU (or your family if there are other kids) must be ready. If you're not ready ,it won't work, as you need to be very patient and prepared for lots of cleaning and washing and to stay home for at least a week, with maybe a couple of short trips thrown in.
This routine of Gina's works and works well. It was recommended to me by other mums with both boys and girls. I know my advice sounds like an ad for her material, it's not meant to be. It's just something that I found that has worked for me - I'm sure there are other good sources of information.
Hope it helps.
