getting rid of head lice

firefly3-4-6 by firefly3-4-6 In Nappies(February 2009) (rank 500+)

i have found that the best way of getting rid of nits is good old fashioned conditioner and a nit comb.  while your child is in the bath you condition their hair and brush out all the notts, then using the nit comb go through the hair as many

times until no more nits are in the comb then i put my child straight into shower to rinse off.  leaving all the nits to run down the drain.  i do this every second night for a week and the nits dont come back.  well not until the next out break at school.  hope this helps someone. if you are anything like my family headlice can be an expensive pain all year long, this way is less costly and chemically enhanced.

Re: getting rid of head lice

This method has always worked for my family. I refuse to put expensive chemical insecticides in my hair or that of my kids when something as simple and cheap as this really does work.

I am glad this method worked fo you.........You can also use tea trea oil,,,,,you can buy tea trea oil at any health food store. You rub the tea trea oil into the hair,,,,,leave on for 5 minutes then wash out with shampoo,,,,It really destroys the creepy crawlies!

Re: getting rid of head lice

we use tea tree shampoo every other day  of the school term and on the day that my daughter doesnt wash with the tea tree shampoo we pull her hair up and lightly mist with hairspray that way they nits cant stick to the hair shaft.

you get it in a clear bottle in woolies and the shampoo is greenish- it is near the coal tar shampoo etc. It ihas been brilliant to keep the nits away when other kids just keep reinfecting.

Re: getting rid of head lice

This is good basic advice, however I found this advice by Toosh to be really helpful when we had unwanted freeloaders... It also involves using conditioner and a comb, however the added natural ingredients worked very quickly for our wee man and we have yet to have any further problems; you might find it interesting to read too.

We use spray to comb through our wee mans hair when there are outbreaks at his daycare, and we spray some in his hats, it smells quite nice too.
