JUICE AND BABIES

winja by winja Talking Back(March 2009) (rank 40th)

Juice is seen as a healthy way to give your child vitamins and fruit but did you know:

That breastmilk (or formula) is the only liquid that babies should be fed under 6 months?

Even though Heinz and other baby brands have brought

out “baby” juices most health organizations in America, Australia and the UK will recommend that juice should NOT be fed to babies especially under 6 months of age.

After 6 months juice still isn’t recommended (they still don’t actually need it)and milk and water are still the most desirable drinks to give a baby.

If you want to give your baby juice

*give them diluted juice , one part juice and two parts water , this helps to bring the sugar levels down to an acceptable level

*NEVER citrus fruits, citrus fruits are not recommended for under one year olds due to the acidity and the potential allergy risk.

*Feed the juice in a cup not a bottle so the juice isn’t on the teeth for an extended period of time and NEVER at bedtime.

Problems with juice

*Juice can eat the enamel off teeth causing decay and future problems that may later need dental care. juice can actually be just as bad for teeth as fizzy drinks.

*Feeding your baby juice will make your baby feel full and encourage them to reject breastmilk or formula in favour of sweeter things. If given in large quantities it can also stop them from eating properly and cause health problems due to lack of proper nutrition,

*Juice can cause diarrhea in babies and cause them to become dehydrated

*Can cause obesity due to excess kilojules if given too often and too much.

* Juice can actually cause malnutrition and stop babies from developing normally due to the fact it can cause the body to absorb less carbohydrates.

*Apple and pear juice can contain two types of sugars fructose and sorbitol which babies cannot absorb it can cause diarrhea in large quantities.it can also give them wind and severe stomach pain.

Now im not saying to NEVER give your child juice, I give my 15 month old juice every now and then too, I just wanted to list some of these things so other parents are more aware of what juice can do and that its better as a treat every now and then than an everyday thing or part of your childs regular diet. Sometimes a “treat” just isn’t a treat if its given all the time….

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

great Advice Nat.

I had to give Katelyn prune juice when she was about 4 months old BUT it was like 1 part juice to 50 parts water or something silly like that!! this was because she had gone about 25 days without doing a poo. I wasnt happy about giving her juice but had no other way.

now though Katelyn ONLY had breast milk or water there is no way she will have juice or cordial until she is much, much older!!

thanks hunni!

lol i dont think that sounds bad! when theres a reason for doing things you weigh up the pros and cons and do whats best! i read that grape and prune juice are the best kinds somewhere?

anyway i doubt shes going to replace breastmilk with prunejuice lol if she does.... BUY BIGGER NAPPIES!

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

Fantastic advice Nat.

I have always said that my kids were never going to taste cordial for as long as i could keep them away from it. JOshua is 3.5 years old and i can say he has never tasted it and has only ever has juice so far watered down that you can faintly see some colour. He only gets juice less than once a week as he and Amy just love water so why introduce juice and cordial to them.

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

Good advice and I think dentists would agree with you, limiting juice even for older children.  My dentist told me that things like juice and museli bars are the worst for decay because the sugars stay on their teeth all day.  Water is the better option or eating the whole fruit is better still!

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

thanks DW i know they would agree lol
yes i

was told that juice could be worse than fizzy drinks because at least parents understood fizzy drinks had sugar and the child needed to clean their teeth and limit their intake! scary that their isnt more education on the subject!

This is a great article....the more information parents are armed with, the more educated they are about what is good and bad for their children.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice facts. Seeing as this article is based on facts and personal experience, would have liked to have seen some references so mum's could click and check it out. Overall informative, interesting, although short. I would have liked to have seen more.

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

right....... well i think this article is about as long as it needs to be? in fact i think it is fairly long?i dont think you need to go on and on to make a point, actually i find really long articles tend to become boring.

i took most of this from my own common sense, aswell as doing alot of reading recently and in the past,i also had long discussions with a dental health assistant a few years back so i cant reference her but article such as this one www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp are there if mums need more proof to my claims? frankly i didnt think they were all that outrageous that people wouldnt believe lol

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

I think that is the point isn't it? people write what they want to see. Some people prefer long articles and some people tend to like shorter articles. This isn't a personal attack, different people like to see different things. I believe what you're saying but would have liked to have clicked on the links for further reading :)

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

A really great article Nat.

We have 2 children from the same family at work (preschool) aged 4 and 5 and they both have to have surgery to remove all their teeth due to being given juice and cordial way too much, their teeth are all completely rotten down to the roots. It's very sad to see.

My boys are both allowed to have juice or cordial but it's only a few times a week and even Zak who is 8 next week still has it very diluted and I've also explained why I do it to the both of them. I'm lucky in that they both had water from day one and still love it. Luke especially prefers milk and water, Zak prefers sweeter drinks but knows why he can't have them all the time.

Well Done Nat

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

thankyou hun it means alot to me that you enjoyed this advice :)

i see ppl take their kids into the hospital to have thier teeth ripped out from drinking juice, fizzy and cordial in bottles around my neighbourhood, i see their parents cry and say how they wish they could do anything to take the pain away and how they would do anything for their child and i wonder if they KNEW would they have still given them  the juice? or would they have thought a bit harder about how worth it it was to have it?

its so sad but education is key to changing some things so thats why ive written this in hope that it changes one persons mind...

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

Awesome advice Nat! This is something I come across waaay too often - parents letting there babies drink juice instead of water or milk...my kids have had juice occasionally from about 9 months but it has always been diluted in the way you say in the advice & still is even now that they are 2 and 3!

This is definetly a subject that parents really need to be educated on, well done!

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

thanks matey!

yes its not nice to see people use juice like  water! as i stated in this advice im not telling anyone not to EVER use juice tobias and chloe have it sometimes too, i just think parents need to learn and know these things so they can know what they are giving their child...

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

I know, i come across this all the time at work.  Its makes me cringe to see babies being put to sleep with a bottle of juice- in this case its my professional obligation to educate.  I disagree with the vote down- but i guess you can't please everyone.

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

My kids rarely get juice. The twins are 10 months and have never had it. They get milk or water. My 2 year old has the occassional weak cordial and juice even less often. Even my teens dont have that much. They all prefer water. Much cheaper on the hip pocket lol but if they are going to have fruit, then they have fruit, not the juice. More fibre that way. Most juices from the supermarket if you read the label, contain traces of juice and a lot of preservatives etc.

Re: JUICE AND BABIES

thanks i forgot to add that! lol yeah its much better to give a child a peice of fruit juice isnt nearly as good for you as a peice of fruit is.

we dont drink it either, the kids drink water or milk and so do i unless we are out for dinner or having a treat.
