Child's Height Predictor

LisaPetrarca by LisaPetrarca Talking Back(March 2009) (rank 107th)

Do you wonder how tall your child will be? Unfortunately, it begins to become especially important to parents as your child enters sports. With the cost of college these days, many parents are turning to extreme measures: private weekly sports training, frequent doctor's visits to check height, and even growth

hormones to try and get an edge up on the competition. Scholarships, scholarships, scholarships...this seems to be the topic of every parent. I've even heard of parents taking their child for frequent X-rays to see how much growing room is still left in their growth plates. Fanatical, maybe, unfortunate reality...absolutely!

I came across a doctor's height predictor website and thought many of you parents would find it fun to estimate your child's ultimate height. CHILD'S HEIGHT PREDICTOR.

This is a great website and from what I can tell...seems to be pretty accurate, (I did the calculations for my full grown 21 year olds and my 17 year olds), it was exactly right.
Stop by and enter a few details (parents height, child's age, height and weight)...and the final answer will appear~and it's FREE.

****NOTE: I in no way support or condone the above mentioned behaviors of parents who obsess over their child's height. My sole purpose was to discourage people from resorting to such drastic measures. Listing the website was to provide a safe and harmless way to satisfy your curiosity.

Re: Child's Height Predictor

There is aparrantly a simpler way to predict a childs height. Simply times the height they are at the age of 2 by 2. By that calculation my son will be 97x2 = 194cm. towering a wopping 30cm over me and it wouldn't shock me in the slightest if that were to be true and I wouldn't be phased if it were a myth either, he will be who he will be. He is already above the 90th percentile for his height/age range and his weight is fit to match. My partner is taller than I am and his sister is even taller, its all in the genetics. I agree with magenta that to some parents hieght/weight etc is so important and that is really sad.....

It is sad that height, weight etc is so important to some.  I had a go, just for fun!  I also read your article through to the bottom and not at any time did i misinterpret it.  It was for fun, and yes there is a serious side to some parents and what they expect of their children which is not good for the children or the parents themselves.  You made it very clear that this is not how you feel.

Thank you so much for your response. I'm glad you understood the point I was trying to make, along with the fun behind trying it out.

THANKS AGAIN!

Re: Child's Height Predictor

I am sorry you misinterpreted my intention of providing the height predictor website. I in no way intended to imply that the lack of height is a bad thing. I wanted to expose the unfortunate practices of some parents and provide a fun, safe, non-harmful way to satisfy a parents innocent curiosity. I added a special disclosure at the end of my article to clarify any misunderstanding.

Thank you for clarifying that.  I am glad that you did.  It is good to hear that you do not support those actions.

Re: Child's Height Predictor

It is fun to wonder how your child is going to look when they get older.  I guess it is like wondering if you are having a boy or a girl or what color eyes they will have before they were born.  The thing is that they will become who they are meant to be.  Taking them to x-rays and constantly obsessing over their height is not goos.  If they do not end up being tall as adults they will feel inadequate, like they have let you down.

Yes, college is expensive but there are other ways of cutting the costs.  Getting good grades in highschool and obtaining scholarships based on academics is an excellent way.  If none of that works out then there are always student loans.

Perhaps you did not mean it this way but your article makes it sound like it is a real bad thing if your child is short.  I completely disagree with that.

Re: Child's Height Predictor

Wow.  I didn't realise that a child's final height was so important to some parents.  And that people actually expose their children to unnecessary radiation!  And giving growth hormones- surely that is a form of abuse.   Am I that naive? I am just glad my kids are healthy and don't NEED doctors visits and x rays.

I vaguely remember something my orthodontist said about predicting height- so perhaps the answer might also be in your teeth.

Honestly, the height of my kids is not that important to me.
