My babywearing journey |

I obviously haven't tried all baby carriers but I have tried the main types of carrier. I thought I would write about my babywearing journey especially after reading this article by winja where she shares some great information. I will try not to repeat but only to reiterate.
When I had my first child I was given a Snugli. I used it very occassionally and only once with my second born. I remember it was the first time I took him out. He was only a few days old and we were going just around the corner. I was in agony and couldn't wait to take it and him off. Granted he was a heavy baby (4kg ) but babywearing shouldn't be like that. Sadly,I conceded that I had a bad back.
When my third child was a toddler I started thinking about babywearing. I bought a stretchy pouch from Bear Hugs. This was fine but I wanted something with more structure so looked at the Ergo. Eventually I bought an organic denim Ergo. I loved it. I loved how he would fall asleep in it when he was tired. I loved that my husband could use it. We could go out as a family without the hassle of a pram.
After I had my forth child, I looked into other babywearing options. J is my heaviest baby. People ask me how I can handle carrying him. With a proper carrier I hardly notice his weight. As a newborn I used the Bear Hug pouch. But soon he was too heavy for it so I used the Ergo with him in a cradle position. Both were great carriers to breastfeed in. I made a couple wraps. Though they take some practice to use, wraps are the most comfortable as it reduces pressure points. I also have a Didymos which offers great support as it is woven and moulds to baby's shape. For the warmer weather I found the Ellaroo mei tai, close to perfect. This carrier would be my overall favourite so far (it may change when I use the Didymos more in the cooler months). I have made a rebozo style carrier and also have a Selangdang (Indonesian baby sling) which are compact. I plan to use these more as J is getting older, has better neck/head control and can sit on my hip. I have a Zolo ring sling also which I use for convenience. They are easy to put on once you get the hang of it and fold up easily when not in use.
I haven't gone into much detail but just wanted to give an overview of our experience. I love wearing my baby. I never use the pram now. Its lovely to be able to tend to his needs quickly and easily. I am glad that I have been able to wear him from birth. He is not spoiled, he is loved.
