Diapers and Nappies for Greenies

matthew by matthew Minti Founder(March 2006) (rank 32nd)
I just read a great post on Treehugger providing a listing of their top eco-friendly diaper alternatives.

On the list they included:

gDiapers - these guys provide diapers (also called Nappies in some countries) with flsuhable inserts and have received certification on their biodegradable status.  A more
detailled review is at Treehugger here.

a Spanish company called Crianza Natural provides diapers which are biodegradable or reusuable with various levels of positive performance versus the traditional plastic and cotton models

Aussie company SeNevens International provides diapers which degrade with just 6 months (versus the many years a traditional diaper may take to degrade in a land-fill

but perhaps the most Earth-friendly approach is to go diaper free as many nations do in the developing world - there are some tips on how this can be achieved at Diaperfreebaby.org

Hope you enjoy the links and let me know if your baby gets to test drive any of the more solid models !

Great alternatives to disposables
thanks for the introduction to gDiapers and the diaper free method (and these other brands), Matthew.  WIth a baby on the way next January, I've been obsessively researching eco-options for diapering; disposables were/are not a consideration for ecological/disposal purposes and I was looking for the best /easiest cloth diapering option.  The info that I've read on gDiapers makes it my first option and the ease also ensures that my husband will lend a hand (was questionable when considering the cloth route).  I won't tell him when I begin to incorporate diaper free; I'll leave the surprise for when the baby starts crawling toward the bathroom one day ....

Thanks again.

Our experience
Matt - I liked the advice as it is a good topic and you link to a lot of good options.

Unfortunately our experience so far is that we have not yet found a good Eco Friendly disposable nappy. The ones we have tried have not come up to par. Rachel will know more specifically what brands we have tried.

Diaper Free
We did Elimination Communication (EC) with 2 out of 5 of our kids and not only did we save on diapers, but toilet training went more smoothly. Thank you for including the info on DiaperFreeBaby, this will be helpful for parents who wish to try EC.
