WHOLEGRAIN Bread is Best

MotherofJWE by MotherofJWE Speaking(March 2009) (rank 307th)

Re: brown bread
Asked by lilkel

Question:

is brown bread ( not multi grain ) ok for 21 month old?

My Advice:

WHITE BREAD - don't even go there!  Sticks to your digestive tract

like glue!

BROWN BREAD - is often white bread dyed brown!

MULTIGRAIN BREAD - is often white bread sprinkled with multiple grains!

WHOLEMEAL BREAD - is actually made from the WHOLE grain (meaning the rusk as well) but is ground into what is called "meal" or flour

WHOLEMEAL MULTIGRAIN BREAD - has the lowest GI and is the best for you, contains both whole grains ground down to make the flour AND  a sprinkling of grains!

Also - Make sure the bread you buy is free from preservative 282 (Calcium Propionate) - can potentially cause irritabilty, asthma, migraines, fatigue, learnig difficulties, aggression, gastric irritation, headaches and some people can be particularly sensitive to proprionates in conjunction wiht other chemicals.

My son is 17months old and has been having wholemeal multigrain bread as long as I can remember.  Saves on having a fussy toddler later that will only eat whitebread! Toast is especially good for fibre but when he is really hungry I often just offer him a slice to chew on, straight from the packet - he loves it!

Re: WHOLEGRAIN Bread is Best

I agree with your article entirely... The only thing that could make it better would be a little more information about the health benefits of eating wholemeal/wholegrain bread and the detrimental aspects of white bread.  I also had some friends telling me that in the USA; their bread has a high sugar content and is more like cake than bread... Is there anyone else that can tell me more about their opinion on that?
