STRIP WASHING MODERN CLOTH NAPPIES

winja by winja Talking Back(April 2009) (rank 43rd)

  • When using All in One nappies or bamboo or hemp inserts in pocket nappies you will need to strip wash them to keep them at maximum absorbency and to stop them from stinking like wet dog PHEW! The nappies are super absorbent so they can get clogged
with detergents or creams after awhile.

Baby behinds have their own washing instructions for their nappies but I do things a bit differently as I found in TAS it was hard to get enough sun to keep them smelling nice all the time!

HOW TO KEEP YOUR NAPPY NICE!

    How I strip wash:

Get clean dry nappies and put them in a bucket of water with half a cup of vinegar (baby behinds don’t recommend this due to the fact that it will wear the nappies out quicker but it works really well and I havent found its caused any damage to mine) leave overnight.

the next morning pour the whole bucket and all its contents into the washing machine.(pop in half a cup of bi carb if desired)

    • Set on HOT and on rinse up on a high water level,

    • once that’s done set it on whatever HEAVY DUTY wash you have and leave to wash without any detergents or soaps again on high.

    • Set them on one more rinse and for extra oomph pop in a cup of teatree oil .

    • Dry in the sun.

    EXTRA TIPS

I add half a cup of vinegar to all my washes I find it keeps everything cleaner and helps to keep the machine clean also.

Adding bi carb to every second wash is recommended by baby behinds.

Washing with only half the normal detergent will stop you having to strip wash as often.

Strip washing should be done when nappies start to smell or stop being as absorbent.

Using liquid dishwashing detergent inwash can help strip wash  but you must continue to use the rinse mode unless there are no bubbles left.

Dry in the sun as much as possible to kill all bacteria

Don’t use napisan on MCN as it just clogs the material further and breaks down the nappy.

    HOPE THIS HELPS!

Great info. I have only strip washed a couple times. Once for storage (after Av tt) and just recently cos we use mostly bamboo now. It helps a lot.

    Thanks for this.

Great advice Nat, would this work to make Katelyn's cloth nappies fluffy again? I've found they are becoming a bit like cardboard..

    Re: STRIP WASHING MCN

    hey chicka.

some of this will work on flats!

some people use fabric softener but it clogs the fibres and makes it less absorbent which is no good for nappies haha have you tried putting them on an extra rinse at all? its normally hard water and a build up of detergents that make them go hard.

i add a cup full of vineger to my wash or a couple of tbsp to the final rinse and as simple as it sounds try shaking each nappy straight after its out of the washing machine and as you get it off the line, it works!
