ROADTEST- wool nappy covers

winja by winja Talking Back(April 2009) (rank 40th)

  • Being a cloth nappy user I have tested lots of different types of nappies and found they all have different pros and cons, I use,All in Ones and Pocket nappies, I have fitteds and flats and home made and store brought, this is the reason when I
heard about wool nappy covers I just had to try them and see what all the fuss was about. This test was on Babybeehinds wool nappy covers.

I was pretty skeptical as to how well they would work, I mean….. its wool yeah? Like a jumper? Ummmmmmmm????????? Huh?

Ok so my main thoughts were this:

They are soooooo going to leak! How itchy would that be? Omg how much is it going to STINK! How bulky will that look its like wool jumper underpants!

ok so pretty much I thought they wouldn’t work very well but I wanted to try something new as  I have found that:

     PVC covers

get smelly and don’t let any air out, leaving my bub with a sore bum if we leave them on too long (like overnight) , they dig into his legs and leave marks, they rip so have to be replaced, but they DO stop any leaks onto clothes or bedding.

     Cotton covers

breathe, but I can’t leave it on too long (like overnight) because I will just end up with soaked sheets and a crying baby, they are more comfortable though and nice to use during the day over the top of flats.

So I saw some baby behind wool covers on sale in the clearance section of their online store and I bought two thinking that way I wasn’t wasting too much money. To my delight here is what I found.

     Yep they are bulky as!

All pilchers are fairly bulky due to the nappy underneath, a padded bum doesn’t upset me too much its more the question of whether the little bottom will fit into his trousers or shorts with his nappy on haha! I found the wool covers to be quite slim! i always have the option of using my thinner nappies if i want.

The covers I brought do not look knitted (though im sure the knitted covers work just as well) they are like a pieces of wool material and they are fitted and sized (small, medium and large) for your baby with Velcro tabs so pretty easy to get on and off.

     No they don’t smell!

The nappies I got had be pretreated with lanolin which neutralizes urine! Combine this with the fact that wool is breathable and you have yourself a self cleaning nappy! Ta Daaaaaaa! Wool covers actually don’t have to be washed all that often, you just air them out so they dry and use them again! I have two so I alternate and ive found that’s all I have actually needed! I actually found that plastic covers still smell a bit after air drying and I haven’t found this at all with wool.

NO itches! no elastic marks! No bottom rash!

Unlike most PVC covers, wool covers are put on like a disposable nappy with grip tabs so there’s no elastic digging into my babies legs which is always a good thing, they are nice and stretchy also. Being breathable it allows the air to circulate thus preventing nappyrash so wool covers actually take care of your baby! They are super soft unlike nannies old knitted jumpers that itched your neck!

     Leaks?

No leaks! We have had these for a few weeks now and I have been using them daily and so far they have not leaked even once! We use them of a night because they work so well and they have given my AIO night nappies a chance to be strip washed again haha! I find in the morning his actual nappy is soaked the cover is still dry on the outside and he has no redness or irritation! Wool covers work great for nights!

     Extra care?

Well as I said these covers don’t have to be washed that often, about once a month actually or if it gets “dirty”(I just wash them in the washing machine with the rest of my clothes if the nappy leaks and we have a poosplosion, the tabs can be folded over for washing so wont catch on your clothes) the catch is it needs to be re-lanolised (not even sure that’s a word!) once a month.

     To do this you:

Go to the chemist and ask them for some lanolin, baby behinds recommends “lansinoh” which is used for sore nipples when breastfeeding so you may already have some, I was given a few in my bounty bag.

Fill a bucket with a small amount of hot water and add a little bit of lanolin to the water and mix it around till it dissolves,  make the water luke-warm and pop the nappy in and make sure its covered in water and make sure the water is not hot because it will shrink your nappy
    •  leave for at least an hour (I left mine overnight and the instructions say you can)
    • squeeze the water out and wrap in a towel and get it as dry as you can
    • hang in the shade, leave to dry and your DONE!

Another plus is my wool covers are really cute to look at! They are also flame retardant which is always a good choice for night clothes. so if your thinking about giving cloth a go, try wool covers! ive only tested babybeehinds but i am sure all wool covers have similar properties.

    hope this helps someone

    thanks xxxnat

I wasn't fond of the BBH covers but I knit all our nappy covers and I wouldn't use any other nappy cover. Wool is amazing!

This is so good Nat!  Very informative and useful.  Well done.  Tho like you said, you have only tested the one brand, I am sure it would give someone the cofidence to try this or another brand of wool covers.  Excellent work!
