Making that special birthday cake

Blackcat by Blackcat Talking Back(August 2006) (rank 103rd)
I remember when I was growing up my mother was never big on birthday cakes and kids parties. I remember having a party for my 13th and 21st both time with store bought cakes, at the time never thought a thing of it.   Once my daughter was born and her
first birthday wasn't too far away my mother in-law gave me the her tried and trusted Womens weekly birthday cake book.  One she had used for her children.  I thought it was a fantastic idea and started what is now tradition.  Now with three kids (2 born in March and 1 in February) its an exciting, and busy, time for the eldest two with lots of thought and countless changes of their selection.  I have even made cakes after moving interstate, having recently given birth and not knowing anybody to invite it was just us to have the cake. I have made Nemo, A Ninja turtle, Clone trooper, Tigers the list goes on, even my husband wanted a Stargate cake for his 30th.  Its amazing what ideas you can get off the internet and combine them to make your own version.  I sometimes think by the time they all turn 10 thats 30 cakes made, only to be gobbled up by the end of the day but I hope that they all will remember and cherish knowing that I have put that bit more extra time in and made their birthday a special day with a cake that is as individual as they are.

Mum made our cakes

There was usually a theme to the birthday when we were in NZ and the cake reflected that.  The easiest cake I remember must have been the 'round the world one'  as that was mostly decorative icing i think.   Pretty laid back.

I have done the same for E. Next year she has decided that i must have a circle cake with rainbow icing, and she will have a pink triangle - if that is ok with mummy of course.    Looks like i will have fun wuth the icing.  I brought some food pens recently, for decorating cakes etc, there are only the four colours that I have been able to find but even still, they make a pretty rainbow.
Peace

Cakes

I have recently bought the same book (my son turned one two weeks ago). I wanted to make a cake for his birthday, rather than buy one, but as i work full time i found that i didnt quite have the time. (lucky Nana had the time and made a beautifl one for me) Hopefully as time goes i can find the time to make and decorate the cakes to.
Well done to you for the great cakes - i know the look a child can give you when you make the cake for them and its better than they ever imagined.

Good for you!
My mom always baked our birthday cakes. She didn't do it as elaborate as you. But we love them. My mom use to put money in some of them. We loved that!!!  I have recently started doing some baking. I baked my twins their birthday cakes in May. One was in a shape of a rabbit. That's as far as I have gone. lol.

special birthday cakes
although i can cook, I cannot bake very well. and yes there is a difference between cooking and baking. I could never bake a cake such as yours, but I do have a fun idea that has worked time and time again for me. besides a small cake for the birthday child, (which I usually buy at a store) I make a few dozen cupcakes (they can be frozen) buy icing and decorations and let the kids decorate the cupcakes do it as a contest to see who makes the best and after carefully looking over each one, declare that they are all great and their prize is to eat the cupcake.extras go home with the kids another idea is icecream cone cupcakes.

Making that special birthday cake
My mum is a fantastic cook and always made special birthday cakes, but unfortunately I cant cook, but with my kids cakes so far I have bought a ready made cake and then decorated it with whatever they are into at the time, my daughters 2nd birthday cake was decorated in jewells and angels and she thought it was fabulous.   Your cakes look fabulous, I tried making one from a birthday cake book but it was a disaster lol.

Birthday cakes
Thank goodness you can take photos! They are great. I am not a good cook. I rather someone who knows what they are doing to bake my kids' birthday cakes. But if ppl can do that I admire it.

My mum bought a book with instructions on how to make cartoon ones, like tom and jerry, the finstones etc. but never used it. i always thought it would be so cool to have something like that done for me. but oh well... another hint for the hubby ;)
