That's right I said free. And there's nothing illegal about it. As you would be aware the supermarkets have specials. Most of them run for just one week. Sometimes it goes from Monday to Sunday. Or sometimes it's Wednesday to Tuesday it just depends on the supermarket you shop at.
Oh by the way what I'm referring to happens in Australia. I don't know if the same exsists in other countries.
What I'm referring to is something called scanning policy. Not all supermarkets are part of it, either. You have every right to ask your particular supermarket if they follow the supermarket scanning policy. That is if an item and I think it has to be under $30.00. Scans at a higher price than is shown on the ticket. It also must be in the right place on the shelf. So for instance the label says xx brand spagetti and that's in the right place on the shelf. The ticket description is correct and says it's $2.20 and you go through the register and it scans at $2.25. You say to the checkout opperator no I'm sure that price is not correct. She will then call a supervisor who will check this out. Usually last weeks special ticket would have not been taken down. This of course is not your fault. They will then come back and if they're following correct proceedure wil give you the item under scanning policy which is for free. I have had in the past had many items for free. I have had dodgy people say to me. Oh sorry about that we'll put it through at the other price. When I've said no it's that item now free. They have then replied oh yes sorry your right. You must always remain calm and be nice about it. If the item concerned is from a mulibuy it's a bit different. They will give you one item for free and the other at what 1/2 the price of the offer would have been. Eg. 2 for $3.00 and that was last weeks special that they forgot to take down the ticket. So you get one of them for free and the other they put through at $1.50. If you have bought a heap of the special you only get one free the rest they will reduce to what the ticket price had said. Eg. you get 20 cans of dog food the ticket says it's 99c on special and they go through at $1.20. The first ones free and the othr 19 will be at 99c. Remember let it go through the scanner first because if it's not scanned it doesn't technically apply.
Being observant at the supermarket can really pays off. If you think you won't remember the prices at the checkout. Take a piece of paper and a pen and write down the prices of the things you've put in the trolley that's on special.
