preparing to breastfeed

lynwhite by lynwhite In Nappies(June 11th) (rank 500+)

I endorse all of the above advice from others. All I can add is make sure you completely empty one breast at each feed. This gives baby more liquid fore-milk for thirst and then richer hind-milk for satisfying hunger.(may sleep longer!) You will never forget which breast to use at

next feed because it will be bulging!I had pain, mastitis etc. with first baby, much better with second, and used many of the ideas others have suggested including massaging nipples in preparation.I joined a support group: Nursing Mother's Association, do they still exist?I breastfed both "babies" for 3 years!!It was a wonderful bond and all my reading suggests breast milk is good for brain development, immunity, bonding, etc, so go for it. (However, there were times when I thought MY brains went out with my breastmilk!) You are to be admired for persevering through the pain, you are giving your newborn the best start in life, good luck and well done!

Re: preparing to breastfeed

Nursing Mothers Association is now called the Australian Breastfeeding Association - website http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/ and helpline 1800 686 2 686 - freecall from anywhere in Australia.  I think Nat is in NZ though and I am not sure what is available there?
