How you save money at the supermarket, because the power went out......

carole32 by carole32 Standing(July 1st) (rank 500+)

On Monday 29th June we had a power outage at my work. Not really an unusual thing as it is winter. My supermarket like many goes to back up power. which means we can still trade. The back up power doesn't run everything. If the powers only out a short

time it really doesn't effect the running of the supermarket much apart from the lack of bright lights. But if the power is going to be off for over 4 hours as was the case on Monday. We have to empty many of the refrigerated cabinets. My bakery fridge was emptied and the contents put into one of the back cool rooms as they run at a lower temperature and stay at an acceptable level without power. By the way this is checked constantly to make sure it does.    The meat cabinet is another effected. This is where I saved a heap of money. The majority was put into a cool room but not all.

Luckily for me it was my RSM Quicksave shop day. But if it wasn't I would have purchased the meat anyway. It was too good a savings to be passing up. The meat started off marked down at 20% off, then went to 40%. And finally it went to 60% as I knew it would, this is when I grab some, I took my lunch break at this time. I bought it and put it into one of our back freezers until it was time to go home.

This is what I bought,

1 packet of Oyster blade steak                       original price $6.16      I payed  $2.96

1 packet of lamb chops 4 quarter                  original price $8.05      I payed  $3.86

1 packet of T Bone steak (1 only)                   original price $3.56      I payed  $1.71

1 packet Lamb lion chops                              original price $2.42      I payed $1.16

1 packet of diced casserole steak                 original price $5.40      I payed $2.70

1 pacet of lamb loin chops                              original price $12.04    I payed $5.78

1 packet of lamb loin chops                            original price $11.29    I payed $5.42

 1  blade roast                                                    original price  $9.01     I payed $4.33

1 packet of  diced casserole steak                original price $5.73      I payed $2.73                                                                                                                         ______________________________________________________________                                                                                                                     9 packs of meat some will do 2 meals         original total $66.66    I payed $30.65

That's a saving of $30.01. Fantastic saving. Now for me it's easy as I work at the shop. But also I know that's what happens.

And now so do you. Of course as I have said before all supermarkets are different. But if your a person who is able to get to the supermarket easily, then maybe it's worth the trip to take a look. I mean if your a stay at home mum or dad. Or work from home. What are you going to be doing when the powers out ? I mean you can't do the washing or ironing or much without the power. Same goes if you are reliant on the power to use the computer,  I know more than anyone how much a pain it is when the powers out. It happen a lot where we live in the hills of Perth.     I guess that's one of the pitfalls of having so many trees where we live. That's why we have a generator, now.

Also we hadn't cooked any chickens on that day. Or should I say that they hadn't finished cooking as the power went out so early in the day. So we had to dump them, unfortunately. But I remember the last power failure they had just come out of the oven and were being bagged up to go in the warmer. Our Deli manager put them out at 50% off. I called it over the P.A system and they were snapped up. Ironically the power came back on only 5 minutes later. So our customer got a bargain. It's just one of the few posative to come out of a power failure.

If you live a long way from the shops (like me) it wouldn't be worth jumping in the car just in case I can get mark downs. But if you live close to the shops, especially if there is a couple of supermarkets. It certainly is worth taking a look. I was really pleased with a $30 saving. Better in my pocket than the supermarkets. So next time the power goes out look on the positive side rather than the negative. Pardon the pun.

Happy savings

Cheers Carole
