TRYING TO KEEP THE FLU AWAY FOR LITTLE ONES AND YOURSELF

sandra106 by sandra106 Walking(August 17th) (rank 276th)

I remember when I was young and I would come out into the kitchen of a winters morning their would be Dad standing in front of the wood stove he would be stiring the porridge after he had soaked it over night my father use to say go and get

some socks and slippers on your feet you will end up with the flu. I think we had this converstion a few times. My Dad was always a bit ahead of his time I remember he was very insistant when we were little to always put sunscreen on very wise man. His advice on winter though has always stuck in my mind.

1. Invest in a pair of slippers and keep them beside your bed.

2. Always were socks on your feet.

3. Buy a beanie to keep your head warm this will prevent earaches from the cold air.

4. Buy some flanellete pjs and a dressing gown.

5. Invest in some flanellete sheets and always have a flanellete pillow case.

6. Always wear a singlet it is better than a tee shirt because it is close to your chest and keeps in the warmth.

7. Use tissues instead of hankies and thrown them straight in the bin when you have used them.

8.If some one shows signs of the flu use throw away plastic cups use once and throw in bin.

9. Purchase some thermal underwear their are all different warmth levels that you can purchase depending on where you live and how cold it gets.

10. If your room has a large glass window move the bed as far away as you can from the window as a lot of cold comes off the window or hang a large blanket off the curtain rod.

11.Plenty of fresh foods and vegetables.

12.Stock up on over the counter cold medications.

13.Always keep throat lollies in the cupboard but not for small children of course depending on age you can buy medicated lollipops from the Pharmacy.

14. Avoid going out in the night air.

15.Warm meals are always best for winter.

16.Give the softdrink a miss and replace with warm drinks such as milo.

17.Early baths or showers are always best and never wash hair just before bed if you have to make sure you blow dry it straight away.

18.Drink plenty of water to keep oxygen levels up.

19. Keep packet soups in the cupboard or even make your own.

20.Sneak some garlic into their food this is a natural antibiotic or even make some nice garlic bread.

21.Wash hands regualy to keep germs away.

Re: TRYING TO KEEP THE FLU AWAY FOR LITTLE ONES AND YOURSELF

I am very interested in the logic behind the theory of '(18) drink plenty of water to keep oxygen levels up'; it is not something that I am familiar with.

We prefer to try natural remedies like lemon, honey, fresh fruit, home made soup etc rather than over the counter medicines and cough lollies at our house; prevention is better than cure.

Also, in regard to the environment, wouldn't it be better to ensure that you wash glass cups thoroughly when someone is ill rather than throw plastic cups in the bin?

Warm meals and drinks are good for you in winter weather and giving softdrink a miss is always good advice, this is a very interesting article.

Re: TRYING TO KEEP THE FLU AWAY FOR LITTLE ONES AND YOURSELF

This was something I learnt when dealing with asthma our bodies have water in them which carry oxygen to the blood but if you also drink water this also carries it this was a discovery made by 3 scientists in the last few years. So basicly if everyone drank the recommened amount of water we would be alot more healthy but peolpe don't always do this I find it hard myself so I put out a glass and a jug on the bench sometimes to make my self drink it. So if you are not drinking enough water your body is not running to it's full potential. The only way I can explain this is that when the kids get asthma and they get put on the monitor you can see that their oxgen levels drop and get higher as they get better obviously from medication when they are in there, but if you can keep their levels up by keeping your oxgen level up by drinking water everyday. It is obviously alot more scientific but that is the general overview of it.

Re: TRYING TO KEEP THE FLU AWAY FOR LITTLE ONES AND YOURSELF
So does drinking ordinary tap water have the effect of oxygenating the blood or does it need to buy oxygenated water? How does the oxygen get into your bloodstream as water goes into your digestive system and oxygen enters the bloodstream via the lungs? Perhaps it is just that being hydrated assists your vital organs to work properly improving your blood flow thus allowing more oxygen to be pumped around the body? Where are those doctory nursey types when you need them?

Yes it was just ordinary water not oxygenated so the way I understood it was what you said that simply being hydrated properly assists your vital organs to work properly improving your blood flow allowing more oxygen to be pumped around the body if I ever find the information I will send it to you. Now I will good and go and drink my water.

That does make more sense; the water actually hydrates you, (not oxygenates you) allowing your organs to function efficiently and improving your blood flow and amount of oxygen.

Most of these are common sense, and make us feel more comfortable in winter as well.  Exposing oneself to the elements can lower our immune systems in winter, although some children just don't seem to feel the cold!  In Chinese medicine they believe that cold wind energy enters the body through the lower back and back of the neck, hence covering up those areas in winter.  Once upon a time people use to make soup from the whole chicken, bones and all. There are many nutrients in the broth made from bones, and soups tend to have lots of veges in them as well but  i don't think i would rely on packet or canned soup - full of salt, really and homemade is always best!
