Get Your Children to Share their Day With You.

Frontier by Frontier Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 21st)

Sometimes getting your child to tell you what is going on intheirs lives is like extracting teeth from a fish but I cottoned on to an idea from my days helping out at my local school. Every day our prep class has show and tell where 2 or 3 pupils

get to bring something from home and sharte it with the class. First they have to descrbe it and then they show it to the class after which the other pupils can ask questions. Great for public speaking and self confidence and a great idea for the dinner table.

I decided ti introduce show and tell for our family at dinner as a replacement for the news and countless requests to be quiet becuase we were not listening to our children but to a rehash of news that had been broadcast all day and would bre again leter on that night.

Since we have stated this we get a lot more feedback about our children's days and we have started talking about things we are doing as a family. Nicholas our 4yo loves this time of night as he gets to go first to tell us about his day at kindi. Alexander who is in prep always has some news about school happenings while mum and dad give watered down versions of their day.

It certainly brings order to the dinner table and a focus on the family at one of the few times the whole family is together.

Fabulous Idea!
I love it.  We shall do this when we are not together all the time I think.  We currently have times when 'we talk'.   Inspired by her wanting to tell me something, then we spendthe next 30-90 mins 'talking' through whatever is on her mind.  She is a big thinker so it works well for now.  But when our routine changes again this sounds like it will work
Peace

Show and Tell
What a wonderful idea! I know that would work with my girl - she loves to talk about the happenings at school - my kids are chatterboxes like their Dad (not me of course!) but I think Show and Tell at home  is a  good idea.

Sharing their day
Great idea!  What a great way to learn more about your kids while sending them the message that you are interested and invested in them.  Sounds like a win-win situation.  Thanks for the tip!

Excellent idea. We have started doing a little bit of that. My oldest goes to nursery school. I talk about it with her everytime she goes. It is a little like pulling teeth. We talk about the pictures she made, her teachers, and the friends she played with at preschool. My oldest sometimes gets lost in the shuffle and it is our way of giving her that little extra.
