Removing vomit from car seat

KirstieA by KirstieA Crawling(September 2nd) (rank 500+)

On the weekend (Sunday) my 14 month old son vomited in his car seat for the 1st time.  I did not know what to use to get the smell out.  I went to the supermarket and bought a product called foam fabric deodoriser for cars (can be used on

carpets as well) .  I sprayed it on the car seat after cleaning up the vomit and found that the smell of vomit still lingered.  I then had an idea that Dettol may work.  I have used it on carpets and chairs before and it seemed to work very well.  I got a bowl and filled it with the Dettol and got a cloth and rubbed the car seat all over several times.  It is now Thursday and it still smells like Dettol, no vomit smell at all.  Dettol is inexpensive and easy to use and child friendly unlike alot of the car/carpet cleaning products which contain harmful chemicals and state keep away from children and pets. I will definitely be using Dettol again.

Re: Removing vomit from car seat

Dettol (like any ordinary household cleaning product) is actually poisonous... It is a chemical after all.  I am glad that you have rid yourself of the smell of vomit, however be sure that your car is adequately ventilated if you still have the strong smell of dettol, it can be an irritant if inhaled, which is why people are supposed to wear gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing if handling bulk quantities.

A more natural alternative is to wipe away any excess chunks, (doesn't that paint a pretty picture) and sponge with water, then apply baking soda, (this will help soak up the fluid) and vinegar which will react with the baking soda and clean it off. I am not much of an expert, however I do try to use natural alternatives and earth friendly products when possible.  You might find these groups interesting to check out: www.minti.com/groups/270/Natural-Living/ & www.minti.com/groups/49489/Saving-the-planet/.
