The Three Rs

madimom609 by madimom609 Crawling(September 8th) (rank 500+)

I learned the three magical Rs with calming my fussy 3 month old.  Read, rock, and ride.  When she starts getting fussy, usually in the evening, I read to her.  I know she doesn't understand the stories yet (she's only 3 months old) but I suppose the sound of

my voice is soothing to her.  I sit her on my lap and read a book to her that has big, colorful pictures in it.  She seems so intrigued.  Next is rocking.  I usually do this early in the morning.  She wakes up about 7 am every morning and when she begins to wining I rock her.  This usually lulls her back to sleep for a while.  Last but not least, when all else fails to calming a fussy baby, riding in the car always seems to do the trick.  Don't make a habit of it though, or you will burn all your gas and baby won't get used to falling asleep on his own.

Re: The Three Rs

some good advice, but I do agree with the pram or baby sling if bubs get use to going to sleep in the car what would you do on a day that it is pouring with rain once you got the child to sleep you would only wake them again to take them inside from the car.

Thats sweet!

I think touch (massage) is worthwhile too.

Re: The Three Rs

I do touch her while I'm rocking her or feeding her by rubbing her little arm or her leg.  But I don't really know how to massage a baby.  Unless you count rubbing lotion all over her after a bath.

That's lovely, I like your title too, it is cute, sounds like you are bonding well with bubs and finding out ways to keep her calm and happy that suit you both.

I would substitute the ride in the car with a ride in the stroller, baby carrier or sling though... It is a lot healthier for you to do and it is also something you can do around the house if you don't want to go out, as well as being far more environmentally friendly.

Re: The Three Rs

Singing also helps if you don't feel like grabbing a book. I wouldn't recommend rocking too often though or your baby can become dependent on you rocking him or her to sleep every time. Unless of course you're prepared to keep doing it and don't mind dealing with sleeping difficulties.

Yes, I've heard that rocking them to sleep can pose a bad habit.  I only rock her to sleep sometimes if she wakes up really early in the morning when I know she isn't hungry.  (it helps me to get back to sleep too, haha)

Riding the baby in the car works every time.
