Keep it Clean!!!

madimom609 by madimom609 Crawling(September 9th) (rank 500+)

The H1N1 virus (aka swine flu) is rapidly sweeping through the U.S.  And with all the reported cases of it, people are running to doctors' offices at the slightest sign of a sneeze. I understand it's better to be safe than sorry, especially with young ones, but this is allergy

season (where I'm at anyway- in the U.S.)  and it is common for this time to have allergy and flu-like symptoms.  Practice good hygiene people- wash your hands before you eat or drink and anytime you go to the restroom.  If you want to take extra precaution to prevent acquiring germs, carry around some hand sanitizer.  I'm doing what I can to keep my family healthy, by keeping the dust down to a minimum and disinfecting high germy areas such as the kitchen (which is actually a bigger breeder for bacteria than the bathroom!!!) and the bathroom.  Also a good way to keep germs and bacteria down around the house,  spray disinfectant periodically on the most commonly touched items like door knobs and light switches.  Another tid bit for those of you who may be clean freaks- you don't have to clean your home religiously.  This can pose a problem too as children can ironically have bigger problems like staff infection if they are used to a purely clean environment (this is because every time they step outside the house, they are exposed to common air pollutants and germs)  Children need to build up an immunity to certain air borne bacteria so that they don't get sick every time they're exposed to it.  Just thought I'd share this with you.

Re: Keep it Clean!!!

There are a lot of not-so-accurate information circulating around about H1N1. Though it sounds pretty serious, regular flu precautions apply. My husband and daughter came down with H1N1. My husband got it first, but he only had a low grade fever so we didn't think it was H1N1. Then the body aches started and lasted for about 2 weeks. A week into it, we didn't know what it was so he went to the doctor where he tested positive for the flu. A week and a half later, one my 2 year old twins came down with the same thing. Her fever, though higher than my husband's, was still a low grade fever. But then the body ache started. The poor thing laid in bed for a long time, and even though she got the energy enough to walk, she walked very sorely.

H1N1 could be pretty serious, if the child develops complication - like difficulty breathing, and other major signs. But you're right though, there is no reason to go to the doctor in the first sign of a cold and fever. Sometimes, even if it is the flu, the person may not register positive on the flu test because it is too early.

And, as you mentioned, wash, wash, wash hands!

Re: Keep it Clean!!!

Thanks for your comment.  I don't take the H1N1 virus lightly, but unless there are serious signs of complications as you mentioned with breathing or a high fever associated with flu like symptoms than there is no need to run to the doctor.  People around where I live are scared because of the hype about the H1N1 virus spreading (mostly because twice there have been reported cases at the schools in my town)  but I believe if you just practice good hygiene and take vitamins, you should have no reason to be worried.  My daughter was born 6 weeks early so I tried to be sure that my home was spotless and regularly disinfected, however, I have heard of cases where people (usually people who have OCD) religiously clean their homes top to bottom and their children are sicker than children who live in average clean homes.  You can't clean your home top to bottom in every single nook and cranny every day.  It can be tiresome, and who has time to do that!?  I just feel that people forget common hygiene procedures and that is why they are at higher risks.  (this doesn't include people who may have low immune systems or at risk for easily catching communicable diseases)
