POTTY TRAINING TID BITS

tommysmommy by tommysmommy Crawling(September 9th) (rank 500+)

I WAS TALKING TO A FRIEND THE OTHER DAY WHO ASKED HOW I POTTY TRAINED MY SON WHO IS NOW IN GRADE SCHOOL. SHE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS ELABORATE POTTY SHE BOUGHT THAT LOOKS LIKE A CAR, HAS FAUX WHEELS AND MAKES NOISES AND HAS LIGHTS. MY REPONSE WAS "WOW

".

THIS SEEMS LIKE A BIT MUCH TO ME FOR A POTTY TRAINING TODDLER. IT IS HARD ENOUGH ALREADY TO KEEP THEIR ATTENTION AND WHEN YOU ARE POTTY TRAINING, YOU NEED THEIR ATTENTION AND FOCUS, NOT THE LIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF A COOL "TOY".

POTTY TRAINING WAS NOT EASY AND WE HAD ACCIDENTS INTO PRE-K. HE IS GOOD NOW. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU REMIND THEM TO GO TO THE BATHROOM AND IF THEY TELL YOU THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO; MAKE THEM GO ANYWAY. BETCHA SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN IN THERE!  :)  DO NOT GET MAD AT THEM WHEN THEY HAVE AN ACCIDENT, THEY ARE LEARNING. LET THEM KNOW THAT ACCIDENTS HAPPEN, BUT WE HAVE TO BE MORE CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE TO GO POTTY WHEN YOU THINK IT IS COMING.

CHILDREN GET OCCUPIED, THEY ARE PLAYING AND HAVING FUN. THEY DO NOT WANT TO MISS ANYTHING AND IF GOING TO THE POTTY MEANS MISSING ALL THE FUN; THEY WILL OPT TO WET THEIR PANTS INSTEAD. REMEMBER TO REMIND THEM.

AS FOR THE POTTY WITH ALL TEH BELLS AND WHISTLES, SAVE YOUR MONEY.  BUY A SIMPLE WHITE POTTY, NOTHING FANCY AND A PACK OF STICKERS. EACH TIME YOUR TODDLER GOES IN THE POTTY, GIVE THEM A STICKER AND ALLOW THEM TO DECORATE THEIR POTTY. IN THE END, YOU WILL NOT HAVE CAVITIES FROM CANDY REWARDS AND YOU WILL HAVE A HAPPY LITTLE POTTY GOING ARTIST!

BEST WISHES!

Aside from regularly reminding the child to take a potty break, it's also great to know how to spot the "pee pee dance". lol  We've averted wet pants a few times by spotting this dance.

give them a little book to look at while they are sitting there sometimes it relaxes them instead of putting the pressure on them to do what they have to do.

Re: POTTY TRAINING TID BITS

I have to admit, I often complain that there are too many potty training articles on the site, (even when we were doing it).  There are a couple of really sensible down to earth common sense ones that don't cost the earth, encourage consistency and positive reinforcement and this is one of them.  Great post, it'd be even better if you took the caps lock off and reposted it making it easier on the eye; then more people would be likely to read and benefit from it.

Re: POTTY TRAINING TID BITS

my son doesnt have a white potty his is blue lol, i use a rewards chart, with two different coloured stickers red for wees and gold for poo, and he gets a reward at the end of the month if the calender is full.  it works too if he thinks he is getting a sticker he will walk into the toliet.  still alot of accidents but we are getting there.
