ear piercing

Dawn by Dawn Talking Back(August 2006) (rank 56th)

Are there any medical/health problems for piercing ears of very young toddlers? When are kids old enough to get their ear pierced?

Do you have any allegries to metal? I have seen babies as young as 3 months with their ears pierced! My oldest daughter is a

professonal body piercer, and she doesn't  recommend that you pierce before the age of 2 and then not to have their done with a piercing gun as they are not usually cleaned properly. If however your choice is a gun she say to ask whom ever it is doing the piercing to throughly clean the gun in front of you and make sure that the ear rings come in a sterile pack have them open that in front of you as well. she also says your childs ears should be swabbed first and that whoever is doing the piercing should wear gloves. hopes this helps.

Piercings

I allowed my  daughter to get her ears when she turned 8. I knew she really wanted them as that's all I heard from her. We went and got it done.  She was so proud. It was also something I got to share with my only daughter.  She wants her ears pierced again but she has to wait till she is 10 or 11. She wants me to get my ears pierced too.  LOL .

Good info!

it may be a cultural thing

I have always had earrings. I had both my daughters ears pierced when they were 6 months and have had no problems. We used a place that had been recommended by other mothers and used small diamond studs that were not as bulky as the gold balls. We had no issues. BUT just last week my oldest LOST an earring, she is going to be 4 yrs old in 2 months and I had to change out her earrings for others before the hole closed, and with all the screaming, wiggling & kicking, good luck having their ears pierced when they are older.

Wait for her to decide.

I had to ask & ask to have my ears peirced and evenly as allowed to have them done at the age of nine. In later years when I asked why I had to wait to have them done, my foster mum told me it was because she wanted to be sure that it was something I really wanted rather then just a phase I was going through.

Personally I don't like to see young babies with their ears pierced, I think it is tacky.

My 8th birthday
I was very excited at 8 years of age to get my ears pierced. My girl is scared to get hers done and I honestly don't mind if she never gets her ears pierced. Good info Dawn.

pierced ears
I thought it would be cute to pierce my daughters ears when she was born but my mum advised me to wait till she was at least 9, as kids aren't aware of their surroundings and don't necarrsirly take the proper care that they should of them. Plus if your children get into a fight or have long hair they can get caught and babies can pull on them out of curiousity.

I was 10
For some reason my grand Father had a big say in wether I was allowed to get my ears ierded or not.  I clearly recall him stating, "If god wanted you to stick things through your ear lobes, he would have put holes in there already".  As a compromise I had them done for my 10th (First double numbers) birthday.  They were fine until I turned 21 and ever since then for some reason it does not matter what kind of metal ot is, I can't wear earings for more that 2 hours without them going all red and pussy.  I have a belly button ring that started off infected for a year & now can put anything in it & it's fine, the irony is now I have too much belly to wear a belly ring and my ear lobes remain un-adorned.........................I would wait until you daughter (or son) asks if they can have it done, then they get a say & it can be a nice birthday gift.  My neice just got hers done for her fifth birthday.  She was so excited about it.  Bit of a waste not to utilise that I think.

try a reputable tatoo place, if they have a piercer there, they will carry surgical steel jewlery and I do not know of any having a recation to this. I could be wrong, but I do not know anyone that has had a problem with this.

Good to know...
I don't have a daughter to have her ears pierced. But I had mine done when I was 8 years old and I had such bad infections, even though I cleaned my ears as they suggested. Now that I know the guns aren't properly cleaned from person to person, it makes me cringe! EWWW! I will definately follow this advice in the future,.
