Dads and Diapers

madimom609 by madimom609 Crawling(September 26th) (rank 500+)

Why is is that men have such a difficult time changing dirty diapers?  I mean, really.  They have seen and smelled worse things than poop, I'm sure.  What really gets me is these big macho men that gag at the first sight of green poop.  If we can

do it, there's no reason why you can't occasionally.  We as moms need a break now and then. Women really appreciate when dad helps out with the dirty work from time to time. Tip- if you wipe as much of the excess off with the diaper as you take it off, there's less that you have to wipe up.  It really isn't that bad.  And a tip for new moms at diaper changing - if you let baby's bottom air dry for a couple of minutes before putting on a new diaper, this reduces the chances of baby getting diaper rash.  Also applying a little powder helps as well.  In addition, baby's bottom smells a little better. Hehe.  And of course, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wash your hands afterwards.  I see people, men more often than women, change babys' diapers and don't wash their hands. This is an annoyance for me, as there are bacteria in urine and poop. If you forget to wash your hands and prepare baby's next bottle, then baby could potentially get sick.  It's just like going to the restroom, not washing your hands and then eating a sandwich afterwards. Gross.  So please follow proper hygiene after diaper changes. Thanks.

Some men have weaker stomachs then others... or maybe they are just being babies? lol  Fortunately for me, my husband is a very involved dad. I am not going to say that the work is 50/50 between us, since he is the breadwinner and I am a stay-at-home mom. But he does a whole lot. When it comes to the diaper department, he actually changed a lot more diapers than I did during the first 4 days of our first since I had a c-section.

Re: Dads and Diapers

My husband does help out more on the weekends when he's not working, and during the week when he works all day, I don't expect him to look after the baby since he's tired.  But on the weekends, just one time even, I wish he'd pitch in a little more.  He'll feed our daughter a bottle and change her if I'm busy and she's just wet, but if she's dirty, he'd rather just leave her in her crib until I can get to it.  That's what bothers me, and you are absolutely right.  His doesn't smell like a basket of roses.

Re: Dads and Diapers

In my opinion, dads are always looking for the "easy way out" when it comes down to helping the mom.. :) My dad never did that, but now that I am just days away from having my first baby, I can see that my husbant is going to be one of those dads who help by taking the baby out for a walk... I don't get it - baby diapers smell just as bad for me as they do for him, so why the whole drama??? Plus, his poop doesn't smell like water lilies either, so he should be used to the bad smell of things by now, being a 30 year old man :) :) :) Ladies, don't give up, there is still hope, just try setting up your men to do the "dirty work", by saying that you have an emergency of some kind (just make something up) amd that he's the one stucked with the smelly part of that bundle of joy you have together! Maybe in time, he'll get used to it and start helping more, who knows :)

Caring for babies/children should be an equal job; ALL tasks should be shared equally.  Hygiene is very important at all times & I can't say I have ever seen any of my friends or family members, (male or female), change a nappy or prepare a bottle or food without washing their hands... Perhaps I just know cleaner people?

Re: Dads and Diapers

BTW, what sort of powder are you using?  Baby powder is quite dangerous if inhaled, you don't really need to use it, as you say if you are giving baby's butt 'air time' & changing regularly, powder is not neccessary, (I never used it) & I only used special creams now & then if Jaydee got a little red; to prevent nappy rash developing.

Re: Dads and Diapers

I did not know that.  I have been using the Johnson and Johnson corn starch baby powder.  And the only reason I started using it is because I got so much of it at my baby shower.  Otherwise, I probably never would have bought it, but thank you for telling me this.

Corn starch is less of an issue; the real problem is with baby powder made from talc.  So don't panic. :)

Re: Dads and Diapers

Wow, that sounds bad on my part as for the people I know. Typically I see more of my husband's family doing this.  His mom and also his cousin who has two boys, change diapers but I never see them wash their hands afterwards.  One thing I have witnessed people doing in places like stores or even at the doctor's office that really really just annoys me is when a baby spits out their pacifier and the parent picks up off the floor and gives it right back to the baby.  I hate this.  I don't understand why people do this, I know no one in my family would do that, but I see other people do it all the time.

I do not work and consider the house work and looking after my son as my job.  My husband goes to work and works long hours so I don't expect him to do much for me as he is as tired as I am.  I agree we need a break but we need to think of others as well.
