By accident we found some really great hidden gems to take the kids last weekend whilst visiting friends in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne
RAAF Museum
It's located on the RAAF base, Point Cook, (which in itself has lots of planes to see as you drive up
to the museam), the website for it is http://www.airforce.gov.au/RAAFMuseum
It's totally free, you just go to the base, sign in and receive a day pass, dirve to the end of the road and park.
We got there intime for their interactive flying display (Interactive Flying Displays are presented at 1pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.) which was very exciting and you can hear when the pilot is talking to air control.
Inside the museum it is so well set up with past planes used as part of Australia's defence force that we were very surprised.
I do recommend giving them at least a gold coin donation because it is run by volunteers.
Railway Museum
located on Champion Rd in North Williamstown (website www.railwaymuseum.org.au)
It has on display the largest collection of Victorian Railways steam locomotives. There are more than 15 different locomotives, many the kids can climb on and have a close look.
They are open
- Saturdays and Sundays, midday to 5pm
- Public Holidays (except Good Friday and Christmas Day), midday to 5 pm
- Wednesdays during school Holidays, midday to 4 pm
Both of these are very educational as well as interactive and fun
Just thought to share this with you all, if anyone has any other places, just add them in your comments section. this could be a good forum to add activities for kids.
