A creative gift.

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 16th)

Last Christmas I wanted to give my four and a half year old niece Joanna a creative and enjoyable present. My two and a half year old nephew Matthew often likes to do the same things as his big sister so I tried to get similar stuff for him that

was appropriate to his age. For each child I bought a backpack and filled it with craft materials especially card-making stuff (I love making cards). I raided my own craft supplies and checked out the two dollar shop.

My sister-in-law later told me that Joanna could play for hours with her card-making set, longer than she would with any other toy. Also being in a backpack it could be taken with her for trips to the grandparents place.

My mother raved about the creative cards Joanna made with the set. It also encouraged Joanna’s desire to learn to write.  I recently received a home made birthday card from Joanna.

In Joanna’s card making set (in a pink backpack) I put
Colouring in pencils

Coloured pens
Blank cards and envelopes in different colours
Pieces of pretty paper and foil to stick on her cards
Child safe glue stick
Paper punch – cat design (her favorite animal)
Punched shapes I cut from some of my paper punches
Child safe scissors – but TOLD HER PARENTS THEY WERE IN THERE
Stickers
Some pieces of coloured wool to stick on the cards
A colouring-in book

In Matthew’s backpack I put

Crayons
Blank cards, envelopes and paper
Punched paper shapes
Stickers
A coloured poster for his wall
A book

A colouring in book
Given his age I gave his scissors and glue to his parents rather than including them in his pack.

I deliberately avoided glitter. I don’t want my brother and his wife to hate me. My sister-in-law has always warned me about noisy or messy toys and promised to get her own back when we have kids.

In putting the sets together myself I was able to choose items according to the children’s interests and abilities. I was also sure that no-one else was going to give them one exactly the same.

Re: A creative gift.
This is a beautiful idea, I find that nowdays kids have FAR too many toys than they know what to do with so a beautiful creative gift like this one is a blessing for both the child and the parents. thanks for the inspiration

Lovely idea
I love the simple creativity of this idea, not least because make your own cards etc is becoming more and more popular and it is easy to get a complete set of crafty things for so cheap.  I can get for myself for less than £5 here in the UK.  The quality of the decorations being used often dont need to be too posh.
I may well do this for my nephews in a couple of years time
Peace

Sounds like a great Idea.

I might tell my sister this one for my step daughter. My sister went shopping with her husband the other day looking for presents for her for Christmas, and she tells me all she could hear was her husband saying... "Choking hazard for Francis...". So she came home with nothing.. I think I will throw her this Idea... I am sure she'd love to make up the bag, and I know Camille will enjoy recieving it.

thanks for the tip

Fantastic
I often have put together "Show Bags" of fun stuff & craft supplies.  I buy those gift bags for $2- and fill them up.  I often include things from the $2- shops "party favors" section as they often come in sets of 4 for $2-, such as feature topped glittery pens (not glitter in them), novelty erasers etc.  Mine have mainly consisted of library bags (I cut out all they have to do is sew & decorate) & beads etc for jewellery making, with some novelty stuff thrown in for good measure.  My nieces I do them for are older (9 & 13 now).  But always goes down very well, especially as I tend to give them for Christmas & Mum loves the fact that they aren't bored for the LONG school holidays.  I will do cards for the younger ones this year though.  great tip.

Fantastic

What a lovely idea! I shall have to wait until Joanna is a bit older for the beads and sewing but Jo and Matti could use fabric paints or textas. I am sure my mum would love to do it with them (I'll have to put one together for her too)
