Mirena coil side effects - my recent experience, not parenting but slightly connected

taniagirly by taniagirly Speaking(October 19th) (rank 162nd)

Hi everyone just wanted to share what happened to me yesterday at the doctors in the hope that it may help others!

I have been extremely tired lately and really forgettful (can't even remember how to spell that), not a little bit of memory loss - my husband has

nicknamed me Dory (that fish of finding Nemo) - yes its that bad! So i went to the doctor thinking it was iron deficiency - I have had pregnancy and breastfeeding followed by another pregnancy and breastfeeding without a break so figured it was likely that I was low in iron.

I got a bit teary eyed when I was discussing the memory loss, its not a happy day when you admit you need help in that regard but when you sit there wondering how your friends baby got on your lap (forgetting that you picked her up) you know its time to sort it out.  I also have completely forgotten conversations within 5 minutes of having them and shouted at my husband for making decisions without consulting me! Dont even ask how I remembered my minti password today....

My doctor decided to do a full set of blood tests and found that I am in suprisingly good health, in fact he was impressed with my results and said I must have a very healthy diet.  No iron deficiency at all so he said he will refer me to another doctor.  Being an Arab they dont like to discuss issues of mental health or even give bad news so he omitted to tell me that it was the psychiatrist he wanted me to see.  My husband said that is ridiculous - this is a medical thing as it has happened over the last few months for no reason and is getting worse!  So we realised the doctor must have believed I was suffering from depression (I'm happy and have experienced in the past so I would know if I had it).

After a little more discussion we realised that it is exactly like baby brain, only without the pregnancy.  Ding ding - lightbulb moment, its my hormones.  Why? I had a Mirena coil inserted 4 months ago - I dont remember this being listed as a symptom at the time, but then I wouldn't.  So a huge relief to know thats its not in my head - its in my uterus! And its giving me loads of other symptoms I didnt attribute to it until I read about them:

Thinning hair (in my case that is a good thing, I had far too much anyway.  I also havent had to wax so often and my lovely new shaped eyebrows have stayed)

Oily hair (again, good thing, my hair was dry and dull before and now its silky and shiny - best its ever looked to be honest)

Insomnia - had an awful patch there for a while

Nightmares - in between the insomnia

Sweating more than usual

Anxiety - had a feeling that I can only describe as dread for a couple of weeks.

I have not had the acne that some experience (in fact I am.... glowing) and no bleeding so therefore no hormonal outbursts apart from the first week when my family were looking for places to hide from me.

In opening up about my experiences and describing these symtoms I dont want to put anyone off the coil - I'm still reallly happy with it, it has really helped me as I cant take anything apart from the mini pill and Dubai has sold out of that. I think there are no purchasing managers here because every store sells out of everything people like.  I have decided that the above symptoms are mild (apart from the memory loss) and I'm willing to wait a bit longer to see how bad it gets.  I just want people to be aware of the effect of Mirena on their bodies and I wanted to have a rant about a doctor that wrote down I have a mirena coil but didnt consider it as the cause of my symptoms! I'm also wanting to write this down before I forget.............. :D

Re: Mirena coil side effects - my recent experience, not parenting but slightly connected

Someone else wrote about it and directed us to a website, just watch out some ppl are fine until they hit the 3rd yr and then serious problems arise. Do quick minti search and you'll find it.

My DR wanted me to get it, but as I have a history of depression, it is not advisable...Yes I did my research!!! I also don't like inserting anything in my uterus as I've had 3 miscarriages. So always do your homework where your birth control is invloved, Dr's get bonuses if the can get a certain no of ppl to have it.

I opted for the implanon, which is more mood stablising and had no ill effect on me last time.....it hurt like hell to have it in but it is worth it!!!

Cheers Raven

Is implanon that one in your arm? My friend got one in the UK and when she needed it removed over here they werent familiar with it (I dont think its available here yet) so they absolutely butchered her arm trying to get it out! I find my moods suprisingly stable with the mirena.  I used to get depressed (the injection was the worst) but I find if Im not menstruating my moods stay very stable.  I am definitely watching it carefully though and my husband knows hes getting the snip next!

From the research I have done on the internet a lot of people suffer from these symptoms - they just dont tell us in the brochure unfortunately!  Anyway I hope the IUD hasnt fallen out - 3 kids are enough for me! I've checked the strings and they havent moved so should be ok though.

Thanks,
