Disposable nappies vs. Modern Cloth

taranicole by taranicole Standing(October 26th) (rank 500+)

Why would I choose to do something as ‘alternative’ as cloth nappies when I’m a normal (well, I like to think so) mainstream mum? Here are the two main reasons!

 YOU SAVE MONEY

I’m not a fan of putting a “price”

on children but I do believe that if we choose to have kids that we are responsible for making wise financial choices on their behalf so that we can provide them with the things that are really important. My calculations showed me that if I put all 3 of my boys through disposables the total cost would be about $10,000 over 6 or so years. I’d much rather put that towards their education or at the very least a few extra coffees for myself to help me get through the day! ;)   The statistics show the costs of disposables, baby wipes, nappy bags to be over $3000 per child. Alternatively modern cloth can cost as little as $300 for a basic system of prefolds and covers or around $800 for premium/fitted nappy option and that’s just for one child! The savings double the more kids you have!

YOU HELP THE ENVIRONMENT
I also believe that if we choose to have kids that do use up our earths resources (not a romantic thought I know) we also need to look after the environment “for” them until they are old enough to do so themselves.

WATER USAGE Cloth nappies are undoubtedly a better alternative in terms of environmental impact despite what some people may say. The main argument against cloth nappies is that they use up more water but in actual fact it takes 22 litres of water to produce just 1 disposable nappy when you calculate what takes place between manufacturing, production, and getting them from factory to store. Therefore, an extra load a day (or even less if you want to wash less often and have enough nappies) is still a better alternative! It’s also important to note that many of the large disposable companies are responsible for producing reports containing statistics that are inaccurate for their own gain.

LANDFILL The statistics as to how many years exactly it takes for a single nappy to biodegrade is sketchy (300-600years) but the fact that every single nappy ever created (e.g my little sisters..ew) is still sitting in land fill is disguisting. I think its fair to say it takes “a long time” to bio-degrade as opposed to an apple so it’s more about acknowledging our “throw away” society and its impact.

FACTS: If you ou used just ONE cloth nappy a day for the 2.5 years your baby is in nappies you’ll save around $300 and 310kgs of waste going into landfill!

“Lastly, consider the root cause of global climate change. Reusable nappies have a lower energy, fossil fuel and emissions impact compared to throwaway nappies. By teaching your children to reduce, reuse, and recycle - you're setting the stage for their environmental education. Here's hoping the next generation will make the Earth a better place.” QUOTE (ozclothnappies.org)

These are just two of the reasons I was converted and I know cloth isn't for everyone so this post is really for those who are interested in learning about the alternatives or so that people know that there are alternatives if they are interested.

Re: Disposable nappies vs. Modern Cloth

It's great to hear other mum's interested in MCN's.

I tried in vain to convert a few mums when Genevieve was born. Not only are they better for the environment but we've never had a problem with heat rash or nappy rash.

Well rounded with great facts.

Re: Disposable nappies vs. Modern Cloth

 Hi Tara,

a detailed article, it is good to see your opinions in there and some facts, and some sobering thoughts!

I like cloth as I imagine it being myself, and using soft cloth is preferable to paper anyday.

We actually combine cloth nappies with baby pottying - so we use even less nappies. The BEST thing is when a baby poo goes in the potty and then down the loo, touching nary a cloth nappy nor the floor or any wipes! Bliss.

This is one of my advice articles about the related topic of EC.

Combining EC with Cloth Nappies is a more and more common occurence (once again) - perhaps you have visited my site via OzClothNappies?

Charndra, I have read your stuff around here and other places too. I  think you do a great job advocating EC! I've seen you around everywhere - well done getting the message across!

So many great reasons to use MCN. We have found its second nature now. What are disposable nappies?!!!

Re: Disposable nappies vs. Modern Cloth

MCN was not an option when I had a baby in nappies 6 years ago, but the environmental impact of cloth vs disposable was still the same then as it is now, so it was towelling squares for us all the way.  Now whenever someone has a baby, they are gifted with the most adorable MCN I can find!  One of my cousins ended up with a little piggy one, where the ears pulled through slots in the sides, and clips actually did up at the back.  It was a larger one, her bubby couldn't fit it until about 8 or 9 months old and it fit on her until she was about 2, and because it did up at the back she couldn't get it off by herself which was a huge bonus when they were out, as she had a habit of taking the nappy off if it was dirty and when you're out having coffee with someone that's the last thing you want.

Re: Disposable nappies vs. Modern Cloth

What a good article - I have considered trying it with my next child to see how it goes and if I like it I'll try to do it as often as I can to save some money. I'm always a sucker for money saving tips since I used to blow every cent I had LOL I have more respect for my dollar these days.

A friend of mine had an interesting argument, his theory was that we saved the environment for selfish needs as if the planet got rid of us from our polluting ways it would just kill us off and then go back to normal. His theory is that people save the environment to help their generation live longer lol

I have mentioned this in one of your other articles, you mention many statistics and facts but yet still no sources for them... I can't rank this article any higher than I have until you list them.
