RE: How do I choose a name?

babytrekker by babytrekker In Nappies(October 28th) (rank 500+)

Parents these days are fond of giving their kids unique, and sometimes bizarre names, in order to stand out, just like celebrity parents do. It's cool at first, but when the kids grow up, sometimes they backfire and scar the kids for life. I suggest expectant parents should check out

some baby name research tool such as www.allthebabynames.com for more options before they get to decide.

Re: RE: How do I choose a name?

I agree with all the below comments.

I must say tho, when I named my daughter, the name I chose had to pass two tests... the stripper test - does this name sound like a stripper name, and the banker test - would I feel confidant letting someone with this name handle my money for me.

You also have to think of how the name will fit your child as they grow into an adult and then into old age.  Apple might be cute for a little girl, but as an adult and a proffessional it might hold her back.

I know it sounds a bit silly, but lots of names have different coloquial meanings behind them. Tiffini, Candy, cutsy names like that sometimes have "bimbo" attached to them. (Not trying to be offensive!!!) Where there are other names that are seen as nerdy or geeky names.

I HATED my name growing up (Charity). It was so old fashioned, and it made me stand out. I just wanted to be a Julia or a Jennifer like everyone else. Now I love my name, and the fact that I have a bit of my family history attached to me, as it was my great (and great-great) grandmothers name.

Re: RE: How do I choose a name?

Firstly Cher's daughters name is Charity (She's a lebsian) but it suits her. I totally agree about names being cute when there small (try Pilot Inspektor ,the child of the guy who plays Earl in my name is  Earl) and there are many other examples.....E! online did a celebrity name off, of all the names of celeb kids. Some are totally inappropiate in my opinion.

Did you know that names once described your character? Jacob means deciever, in the bible Jacob's name was changed to Israel.....i can't remember off hand what it means but it coincided with a change in his life. So you may want to consider the meaning of names as well.

Some names are connected with different aspects of life such as bimbo's, geeks and nerds. And as you mentioned be wary when choosing old fashion names, I loved it when Fergie picked Beatrice (my nanna's name) It's beautiful but wasn't so keen on her second daughters name (Gertrude I think). Some names are better left in the past.

I hate my name too, and prefer my nickname to my actually name. Be carefully about that to, how names can be shortened or ryhme with something nasty!

Cheers Raven

Re: RE: How do I choose a name?

Thats nasty!! I teach my kids to treat others how they want to be treated.........I wish they would extend it to each other!!!! I was called whole bunch of names as kid, it got worse when I became a teen.......I went from grenade to s**t, w***e and fat s**g.

One of my pastors just preached (like 2 wks ago) the importance of names. It was really cute, he used his wifes guinea pigs as an example. He said his wife is like God and she was especially fond of each guinea pig no matter how they looked or what their name is. I remember it because of the guinea pigs!!!!!

But basically, he was saying that the things ppl say to us and the names they use stay with us and we take on that trait if don't deal with it. I did become those things for awhile, till I relised I was better then all that.

Stick and stones may break your bones....but names will haunt you forever if don't stand up and say I am beautiful, I am intelligent and I am far better than those who were jealous of me!

Cheers Raven

Re: RE: How do I choose a name?

There are many issues when naming a child; tradition, culture, likes and the bizzare shoulds always be considered careful along with the social acceptance. There are some names a child should never be given for example names that are insulting or demeaning. There is also the issue of intials. You don't want a childs intials to spell something awful or for a child to suffer a socially because of it.

An article or advice should be detailed and show points of reference or experience by you, it should not an opinion but contain factual or first hand experience where possible. It should also cover both sides of an agruement even if you don't agree with one side or another. I write based on beliefs and standard of morals as well as my experience and knowledge. My first piece of advice wasn't great, but it gets easier specially when write it like a short essay.

Cheers Raven

Unique names are awesome and if you teach your child confidence there won't be any self esteem issues to begin with.

Re: RE: How do I choose a name?

I think this article would be better if you expanded on your topic, like does the name go with the surname etc...  do you want a middle name.  There is heaps more you could write about choosing a name instead of just giving a website, to look at
