breast feeding in public

silly-mummy by silly-mummy Walking(August 2006) (rank 500+)

i breast fed my son but only did so for 6 weeks, reason being? i had the option of 2 places in my town that were private and welcomed breast feeding, if i was in a cafe and he needed feeding i would place a towel over my shoulder going

down over him so nobody could actually see anything but from quite alot of people i got the glares and comments. i didnt breast feed my daughter but i wish now i had have done, it took longer for my bond to build with her as i hadnt got so much close time and most importantly she suffered with colic where as my son didnt until i changed him to bottles and my daughter was a much more unsettled baby where as my son was more at ease, i am expecting my 3rd baby and i will be breast feeding this baby at home and in public if need be, at the end of the day it is totally natural, 100% better for mother and baby bonding and much better for babys health, and if i get any comments? i will just smile and know i am doing the right thing.

Breast is Best!!
Breastfeeding is one of the most amazing and wonderful things you can do for your baby and for yourself. I breastfed my two girls even when my husband was in hosptital for two months and I had a newborn on the breast, chasing after a toddler through the hospital hallways!! Women have been breastfeeding since Creation - why should we stop now??. As for people commenting or starring at women for bf in public - they are probably jealous or something!! Yes, be discret about it but be proud to be breastfeeding!!

I'll admit I was very cautious feeding my first.

Sounds like your town is a bit small minded.

I remembered my friend fed her daughter once on the outside of the coffee shop in the shopping centre and I had not had any children yet and I was in shock.

Hey it is legal.  But every woman and man walking past you don't need to see how well endowed you are.

Earlier this year I went to the baby show and this lady had no towel covering her and but and just popped it right out while I was eating my lunch.

Discreetion and modesty still have to take place.  I got so good with my daughter I did not have to use any cover.  I found T'Shirts where easy as you would not be trying to keep the other side of the unbuttoned blouse from opening up for all to see.

I got to the stage that if my daughter wanted it I just stopped anywhere and fed her.  There is nothing worse than a hungary crying baby.

O

The natural thing to do
Thats great that you are going to bf your third baby.  I breastfed all my three for over 18 months and still feeding my third.  I have fed them whenever and wherever they needed to be fed on planes, in shops, at restaurants etc.  All my three are very healthy and were very settled as babies.  I was lucky that I didn't have any stranger say anything to me although my nan dropped a few hints that they were old enough not to be fed anymore and there were places for things like that to be done, but I knew in my mind that I was definatley doing the right thing for my children.  As already said it is so natural and the best food you could give to your baby and I think more people have to understand that and be accepting towards it when a mother is feeding her baby in public. Good luck and I hope all goes well for you :)

good for you still breastfeeding, i think the only person who knows when its the right time to stop bf is the mother and if your still happy to bf and your child is happy and healthy then good for you.

Yup
I had the same thing from my nana I breast fed bub in her backyard very relaxed and not minding if she saw as she had 4 kids, but she did have a word to me about it so bub was soon put onto bottle after that I became very unrelaxed. But yes there is a noticable difference in bub's that are breast fed and bub's that are not, I will be breast feeding in public and if people don't like it too bad as for little old granny I will not be seeing her so she will not have to put up with it. Each to their own but society needs to become more accepting because really What is so offensive? My next bub will be fed on the best stuff around and will not starve or be fed in a toilet where ecoli lurks.
