A word about the Library

mcm by mcm Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 5th)
Reading is a fundamental start to learning and essential in life. It is one of the great pleasures of life, I am sure you would agree. No child is too young to join the Library. When I had my second child I was given a gift from the local public library.
It was a gorgeous baby book about a baby duck and his mother, plus an invitation for my one week old son to join the library. I was suprised about that! But it is great, to think that everyone is welcome at the Library. The Library offers a huge array of books for all ages as well as other resources including audio and video. You can even use the internet to use minti and other parenting resources.
I like that the public library is free and you have so much choice. A few weeks later change them over. I personally think books are quite expensive. I don't pay full price for my kids and I usually give them as gifts. I encourage my kids to look after them as I would of the library books.
This may suprise some people - *59% of Australians belong to a public library and more people visit the library than go to the cinema or the video store (probably because its free!)
They also have free toddler activities and school holiday activities. So if you want to occupy your baby or  kids for a while why not head to the local library. The only problem we have in going to the library is picking which books to get. We also have troble leaving the place - its so much fun. My husband is a great reader, he just loves to read and I am glad he has passed on that love to our daughter. Here's hoping he will do the same for our boys also.

Baby member
The head librarian at my local became a grandmother for the first time about two weeks after I had E.  Being a regular at the library and with her so keen to get her grandson signed up E was signed up as a member before she was a month old!!!
We were given a 'Bookstart' Bag, this is a programe that works in the UK to encourage children to read and raises awareness with parents.  They also have gift boxes etc that go out through nurseries and pre-school too.  Finally there is this wonderful website and all prices are knocked down - but some by massive amounts!!!  (Up to £60) www.schoollink.co.uk

Library

I didn't know the library accepts itty bitty babies.   I have just learned about the library's programs for preschoolers myself so I will be sure to stay on top of that so that I can take Matthew to some new fun things. My husband and I have talked about taking Matthew to the library, though we haven't done it just yet. He will likely destroy the books...but I'm sure in a couple of more months he will be just fine.  Matthew is turning out to be a book lover too. At night after he's changed to his pajamas, he points at where I put the bedtime books and says "boo". He gets cranky too if he doesn't get it.

The Library
The library is one of my kids favorite places to go as well!  The libraries in our community offer DVD and VHS rentals as well for only $1 which we take advantage of frequently.  I think parents with young kids often think their children are too little to go or won't get anything out of it.  Thanks for pointing out that they have developmentally appropriate activities for all ages!

Boys will be boys
I must admit we don't use our library much, because my boys both have fairly destructive tendancies, and despite the library not caring about the state a book is returned in, I do! And it embarasses me when they rip out the front bit that gets stamped, and remove the nice jackets and whatever else! I think I'll keep working on respect for property with our own books (mostly 10p from car boot sales) before I let them enjoy the priveleges of library membership.

Library Time
Our local library is great. When you child/baby first joins they receive a library bag & a free book.
We started going to Nursery Time (once a week) which starts from bith till the age of one. Now will go to Story Time (twice a week) which is for all ages up to 4/5. It lets myself & Olivia meet different people as well as exposing her to my passion of reading.
The library also runs KAT ( twice a week, but now once a week) which stands for Kids Action Time, where the kids get to do an amazing array of activitys like: painjting, water play, play dough, colouring in as well as climbing frames, mini tramps, tricycles. It's hard to know who benefits the most kids or their parents

It's hard to find nice clean fun places to take kids to - that don't cost the earth, but our local library is just the place for us.
P.S. Olivia knows most of the librarians names - not bad for 22months old.

We love library
Our family love to go to library. As you've mentioned, books could be really expensive. By going to library we could save lots of money. We always go to library once a week. Taking kids to library teach them to love reading. I think there are some library do a reading club for children too. I know one library close where we live does it. I haven't join the toddler club, but once I went there and a person read for little kids there and did a little activity after it.

libraries
throughout highschool (and then some) i spent as much tie as possible in teh library. i used to sepnd all my lunch hours in ther eand everything as the shoolyard wasa bit intimidating for me... its not so nice when you dont havea single freind but everyone willing to pick on you! but i wuickly discovered that most of those nasty people wouldnt be caught dead in a library :) so i could get great grades as i had more time to do homeowrk and assignments, and read heaps and heaps of books :) mmmm those comfy beanbags.... nothing makes you feel more secure on a rainy day than a great book and a beanbag!
