To Find the Right Doctor

KileeGiles by KileeGiles Talking Back(August 2006) (rank 133rd)

We have been lucky enough to be blessed with a relatively healthy child.  We did struggle with ear infections for the 1st eighteen months which had us discussing the possibility of grommets and now we are having some problems relating to çomplaining of pain in her legs.

The

difficulty initially was how do you find an appropriate doctor to look after your child?

No one in our family has ever had a long term GP, it is too difficult to maintain that relationship with moving houses, states or basically the long wait time for appointments for certain doctors.  I found that the best option is to find a doctor's practice that meets your needs with at least 3 doctors on staff.

We have a number of these options available in our local area and over the past 3 years we have tried them out.  The experiences have not always been pleasant.  My favourite was the doctor who suggested that I was an over reactive parent bringing my child in to have her ears checked when she had a cold.  This same doctor asked me if Mia was my only child, when I said yes and that there were no plans to have any more he proceeded to lecture me on the importance of today's youth repopulating the world.

As you can imagine I have not been back to that doctor or that practice.

The practice we have unofficially chosen as our family practice has the follwoing benefits:

  1. close to home (within 5km)
  2. 3 doctors on staff
  3. children's toys and books in the waiting room (these are washed and replaced regularly)
  4. no more than 1 day waiting time for an appointment but will find space if the appointment is for a child
  5. less than 1/2 hour wait upon arrival (the wait time is often much less)
  6. bulk bill for children (for those who are not from Australia this means there is no out of pocket expense for your consultation)
  7. each doctor has a great way with Mia making her and us feel at ease
  8. each time we have been referred to a specialist we have been very happy with the service provided by that specialist

Each family will have differing requirements when it comes to the doctor who helps them in their time of need.  The above points are what I have found most valuable when looking for a doctor.

doctors

boy we have had our fill of doctors. i had one tell me i wasa bad mother, as my milk dried up when liam was three months. i had one doctor prescribe me the mini pill when i had told him it made me throw up. this same doctor also said liam had oral thrush. we took him to another doctor in that same clinic the very next day whoi said there was no sign of thrush, and that her had an angels tooth. (the first doctor didnt even look- stuck his hand in his mouth from behind without a glove too!) and wait times! we have waited three hours after our appointement time when liam swallowed a leaf a few weeks back.  for them to listen to his breathing and say that there was notrhing in his lungs. clever.

our new doctor is very good. he is the only one at his practice, btu it is only a new one. and his receptionist knows all the patients by name somehow! and they let you know if he is running a bit late, but their 'could be quite a while' means he has a person to see before you, so is never more than 20 minutes\. and all bulk billed.  i think they do accupuncture there too, and it is also a skin cancer clinic.

Choosing a doctor
Here in Canada we have a terrible dr shortage, when we moved to the town we live in now we had to leave our trusted dr and by pure chance a dr was just setting up a practice here, I got the info from our local walk in clinic. I love our new dr, she is young and very patient oriented as well as incredibly patient and caring for our kids, when I had Ayla she came in to the OR ( had all mine by csect ) on her day off just to be with me and to see the baby!! My only complaint other then her incredibly rude receptionist is a lack of toys, she has a large house for the kids to play in and some books, I think I will ask if they take donations lol .. always looking to get rid of a toy here and there lol. My advice ... if you are moving or losing your dr contact the local hospital er as well as the walk in clinic .. they are usually on top of the local dr situation!

A good doctor is hard to find.
I think the most important thing when choosing a doctor is to listen to your own instincts. They do not know everything. If you disagree, say so. If they don't like, too bad, go to a different doctor. And sometimes we know better than them. We learnt this the hard way. I think I have an in bred mistrust of doctors. Also I had a hard time with my own health, having a disorder that was mis/undiagonsed for two years plus. The straw that broke the camels back was the misdiagnoses of two of my daughter's illnesses. My husband, after much searching, finally found the doctor for us. He leaves no stone unturned and if he does not know the solution, he will say so. He is not afraid to be human in front of us. He will do his utmost to find the right answers, even going so far as to doing some research into a terminal illness of a family member who was not a patient of his. He listens to my concerns about various medications and my sceptical comments. If I am not happy about a treatment, we will find one together. The kids love him and frankly so do I. We sometimes have to wait a long time but if we need him immediately, he is there. It was long time coming, but he has us for life, whether he likes it or not. The problem with our doctor are the receptionists!

It is very important that parents feel free to fret about their child without comments from a dr telling you it's a cold and then charge you an arm & leg. Any concerns a parent has should be thorouly explored by you family dr so choose a goodie and stay with them so your child records are kept with one person good artical kile
