Nest Egg

shoolacy by shoolacy Talking Back(August 2006) (rank 84th)

Im in the process of getting ready for a bub, taking folate, having tests all that jazz.A new concern has come to light. My partner and i argue that we should have nest egg of savings first and i want o just jump in and do it worry about it ll

when it comes. i realise that its a big life chioce as were the other 4.I feel im going to give all i can to a baby and the least of them being money.Ill feed for free(boobies are free),I have many clothes because i had been collecting stuff for he unborn son these last few months and living where i am there are many seconds furniture places with incredible deals along with Babyco and Babies galore and other such stores.I m ready.........am i selfish??????

Ok well since your in Australia you get a one off lump sum of $3000 or a little more and everyone can claim this no matter what you earn so theres a little for you to begin with but you only get it after bub is borne. You also get Tax benifet A which is for low income families and is calculated on your total family income, so if it is less than $32,485 you can get the max fortnightly payment of $133.56 per child. Tax benifet B is if your eligable for part a tax benifet you qualify for the $600 suppliment. There is also the child care benifet, Maternity immunisation payment a one off though for babies 18 - 24 months who have been fully immunised and you only get like $213. You can also get a Large family suppliment for families with 4 or more children. And with your already honed budgeting skills and growing supply of baby items I can't see how a nest egg would help.

As for selfish this is not true I can understand your partners point of view on the subject however talk, communicate with him let him truley know how you feel, don't try to win him over just explain why this is important to you now. Let him have his say and see how exactly he believes a nest egg can benifet your family he may have very good reasons, I fail to see them at the moment but mind you I have only one child and the grant I got went into his bank account as I got alot of stuff free. Freecycle, family, friends etc.. just things they had but were happy to give as they didn't have the room, and all of it in good condition and safe. Your sister may even be happy to get rid of the bassinett when her son is done with it same with the cot etc.. I hope that helps a little All the best Lacy.

thankyou lacy
I am aware of all those wonderful benefits that the government allows us. My situation has changed and with much talk and crying with my partner we are taking the time of the 9 month preganancy to get together all those supplies that seem to cost the earth. So all is well thanks again.

Personal
It is wonderful that you have reserched this person's page and made it relevent to her.  What she is entitled to by Australian standards and that with 4 or more she can claim large family helping her even more. Great Post and full of info for  Aussie parents who may not have known or been informed about all benifets they are entitled to.
