Fruit is Yucky

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(August 2006) (rank 93rd)

Today's first time parenting tip - Keep trying with new foods, even if your baby seems to absolutely hate them

Our son hates fruit. Literally, he gags and shakes his head back and forth as if we were making him suck on lemon rinds. It's the wierdest thing...since I'd

think vegetables would be a big turn off.

In any case, we're not ready to give up on him yet. We always make sure he gets a taste of the new food, even if he doesn't want to eat it, we always encourage him without being pushy. Sure, I would never eat prunes in a thousand years, but for babies, they need a full range of fruits and veggies so that they get a wide array of vitamins and minerals.

Plus, it can take up to ten times for a baby or child to warm up to a food. So make it fun, and don't put away the prunes yet...they just might learn to love them.

fruit si yukky
although liam loes his fruits and custard type foods, he wasnt fond of vegetables. i put them away for a month or so and tried him again and he has been hooked ever since. now he eats ANYTHING you pput in front of him, anytime. even if he has had  a bowl of fruit and a bottle, if you have a sandwhich of lunch, he usually ends up sharing it with you. (minus the tomatoes which he sucks on and then spits out a while after)

Lack of bananas Here.
The cost of fruit is making it hard to buy fruit for my children.
The would have to like the expensive stuff.  Banana's are $12 per kilo at the supermarket these days.  I think chocolate would be better but this is necessary for general health.
My son like strawberres and they can be up to $5.00 for a punnet.  As long as they eat I don't mind.
I try to make them each a handfull of fruit a day.
I agree we have to keep on offering as they change there tastes all the time.

My daughter was like that with fruit, so I make her fruit kebabs on a stick, its such a novelty she eats it without even thinking.  However she wont eat strawberries unless they have icing sugar on them!!

good advice
I agree. My daughter actually love's strawberries.. but raspberries and apples(together in the jar) she gag's at them. I feel so bad, but i keep trying her on it. I don't push it, but if she open's her mouth then i put the spoon in! she don't like some vegetable's though.. she's fine with the fruit's but not the vege's. I'll have to keep trying them, i will not give up that's for sure.
good advice!!

good advice...

I found that if I tried a new food, I would not try it again in the same week.. I don't know but he knew... But in the second time I tried giving him something new he often took it.. I was told to give him the same thing for a week then try something different. I did that for two weeks but could see I was not getting anywhere, so I gave in and tried a week later. I found for me that worked much better.. But yes you should keep trying, as even with me I find that my tastes have changed over the years...   I never liked mangoes but now I do.. Strange but true...

You lucked out with ur little one, spacing out the foods he doesn't like!  I waited a month to try Bailee again with carrots and green beans, but she just wasn't having it.  Unfortunately, the grocery stores  in my area don't offer much difference in variety.  I just don't want her to get bored with eating the same thing every day, 'cause then I'm screwed!

I hear ya!  Bailee actually loves fruit, but is VERY picky about veggies.  She won't eat carrots, peas or green beans.  The only veggies I can get her to eat are sweet potatoes, cream corn, and sometimes, squash.  She loves her cereal, as long as there's fruit mixed in with...she won't even eat mixed veg!  However, she will eat meat mixed with veg.  My 3 1/2 year old, Tabitha, ate everything I tried to feed her.  NOW, she's picky about what she eats!  Go figure!
