Ill 10 year old child

exquisite-flower by exquisite-flower Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 9th)

I have a friend whose child has just gone through major surgery on her brain to cure a rare form of epilepsy. What should I get her as a "get well soon" gift? I don't want to get her food as I know she probably won't be able to

enjoy it much amidst the pain. Any suggestions on what I could get her that she will enjoy and help her through the tough times? I was thinking book or dvd but I don't know what 10 year old girls watch or read nowadays. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It may be practical to get her a basic exercise book of some sort, wordsearches, dot-to-dot, etc, maybe one aimed a little below her age, but not too much depending on how the surgery has affected her brain function.  As she has had brain surgery it will help her exercise her brain as well as provide loads of other basic amusement.  And also maybe some sort of little puzzle - along the lines of a rubix cube.  I can picture what i am thinking of, but not sure how to describe.  Something that she can fiddle with, that is easy to do.  Oh!  Like those mazes with the litle ballbearing in them that you have to get to the centre!  Or even a special piece of jewellery, a rosary if she is religious, a charm if she has a charm bracelet, or maybe a little plaque or bookmark type thing with an encouraging quote/poem on it.  I have recently been buying bulk for a childrens home we support in Nepal, but i have been trying to give gifts appropriate to the age of each child as well.  These are the kinda things I have gotten and the other people on the team helping me wrap and pack them agree that they have mostly been good choices.  I would be so bold as to suggest that if she is not too much into reading not to buy her a book - but her parents will be able to help you with favourite authors and so on if that would be appreciated.  I wish you much fun in the search as well as luck and wisdom in hefty doses.

what about bead making?

Girls love beads, why not get some beads so she can make her own necklace or bracelets. You can get a wide range of larger holed beads that can be put on elastic and tied off, otherwise it depends on how much you want to spend on beads and tools and findings. I've given lots of my older friends daughters these for birthdays and xmas etc and its gone down a treat. You can find the beads if your in Brisbane Aust at;

- peppertown virginia

- lindcraft myercentre

- spotlight stores

- beads and beads sth brisbane

otherwise you should be able to but off the internet - hope this helps

Puzzle books sound good
My husband had surgery for epilepsy last December. He enjoyed the word search books while he was in hospital. Great idea.
