First Dental appts

exquisite-flower by exquisite-flower Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 6th)
Just wondering at what age should you make that first dentist appointment for your kids????

Awww, I took my daughter after her third birthday due to lack of dentists.  (It was an NHS childrens dentist, specifically to ensure that children have their checkups - so people in

the UK  may like to look into this in their local area and see if it is nationwide.  I am in Northants.  Took me 5 years to find even one in this town.  Now we are both transferred.)

The check up was literally 30 seconds to count her teeth and show them off.  She sat on my knee for the duration of the appt, and I was advised to continue brushing twice a day and told that even though my daughter likes to be independent and do it herself with no help from mummy thank you very much, that actually i need to persist to ensure it is done properly.  And she got a sticker and really enjoyed herself!

I have heard people say that children dont need to brush their teeth till they are 5/6years old and thier second set start coming through/  The rationale? since they get rid of milk teeth why waste the money! But can you imagine the bad habit that is formed? As far as I am concerned it is important to look after your mouth and your teeth regardless.

In our ante natl classes we were told to start brushing as soon as the tooth cae through, even if we use a face washer to do it, and we should do it for ur children until around the age of seven years old. we were also told that the first dentist viit should be at 2 years.

Yes, this is good advice, also it is good to 'rub' their gums with a soft cloth to clean them up until the age when their first teeth start coming through and you might start using a toothbrush and cleaning the teeth properly

Good Timing
we are in the proccess of looking for a dentist for myself and the rest of the family as our local dentist has dissappeared. It is hard to find the right dentist the first time. your post motivates me to make the move and try one in the area I have been driving past.
