Cutting Your Child's Hair

tracey by tracey Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 13th)

I cut my toddler's hair myself. I've discovered that doing it while she is taking a bath makes it easy. She is distracted in the tub and feels less pressured so it's not so traumatic and then hair just falls into the bath. When we are all finished, I stand

her up, drain the water, rinse her off and fill the tub again to wash off all the hair. It works like a charm! I collect as much as I can before it goes down the drain with a drain cover and the rest washes down. It's just thin, baby hair still so I'm not too worried about clogging up the tub drain. My husband might disagree. Anyway, so far, so good. And her hair looks adorable.

Oh, and if you do cut your kid's hair, invest in a pair of hair cutting scissors at a beauty supply. They are worth every penny!

bald
My now one year old boy is still so "bald" but I had wondered how I would go about giving him a haircut. In the bath tub sounds great ! I cut hair anyway, just did not know how to keep the little one still ... bathtub sounds great ! Thanks, Lisa

cutting hair in the tub
I've discovered the same thing - it's much easier to do in the tub. But, not so good for us since I use an electric razor. I have a comb attachment and it's much easier for me.  Though touch ups, doing it in the tub works great.

So you are saying that I shouldn't use the nail scissors to cut Ethan's hair?
At least I'm not using the scalloped scissors...

Cutting hair
I cut my girl's hair. Her hair grows so fast. We usually wait for a sunny day and do it outside while she has something to hold like a icy pole. She is getting older now and doesn't mind so much now. I shaved my boy's head when he was about a year old as he has severe eczema. I gave him plenty of toys to play with and food! Now he asks for me to do it. He is 3 and has been to the barber with his Dad once to get his hair done. I wasn't impressed as they did what I could have done (no style)
Definitely get proper hairdressing scissors and razor. It makes all the difference. (It wont look as hacked at!)

I cut my sons hair when he was little, at the time I thought I had done a pretty good job, and everyone else said it looked good. But now when I look back at the photo's I shudder, that poor little man, I really am not cut out to be a hairdresser!!!! Mind you I still cut my daughters fringe,  how can I go wrong there!!!

Hair cutting
I have to cut my daughters hair. It's longer on the top then it is on the sides. It's cute though, not that anyone else could tell the difference but since I'm with her everyday I see it lol. At what age should you cut your babies hair?

Hair cutting
My girl had this long strip of hair on top as a baby. I think you can trim it at any age.

Hair cutting

When it's too long LOL!

Honestly, it depends on how much hair they have, how quickly it grows & how short/long you want it to be. I know a 5 year old girl who's never had her hair cut, she was a baldy baby until she was well over 1 and even now it's not much past her shoulders. Conversely, my son was born with a full head of hair, he got his first hair cut at around 9 months as it was too long for my liking. I alternate between trimming it myself & going to a hairdresser, once he's old enough to sit still & not wriggle I'll probably take him down to the local barber (cheaper but not likely to put up with any fuss)

My Mum used to cut my brothers hair
When my brother was little he went through a stage where he would only let mum cut his hair. Then one day she did a really dodgy job on his fringe and they took the school photos the next day. She has never forgotten it!
