It is recommended that some women avoid peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 16th)

I am 5 months pregnant and only just found out that it is recommended that some pregnant women avoid eating peanuts. Apparently it is only peanuts we need to avoid, they consider other nuts safe.

I read lots of stuff on listeria but did not see anything on peanuts

until yesterday.

According to the BabyCentre website the UK government recommends if you, you baby’s father or one of your previous children has had an allergic reaction to something you avoid peanuts during your pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Allergic reactions include eczema, asthma, hay fever and any allergic response to foods.

The theory is that by exposing your baby to peanuts during pregnancy you may increase their risk of your child developing a peanut allergy. At this stage it is only a theory but due to the increasing number of children with the allergy and the potential severity of the reaction they are recommending avoiding peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Full details of the article can be found at; http://www.babycenter.com.au/pregnancy/nutrition/foodsafety/peanutsexpert/

Both my husband and I get hay fever and my brother had an A4 page of food allergies as a child. Ironically he was allergic to all nuts except peanuts. So now I am regretting the peanuts I ate on Friday and the occasional peanut paste sandwich I have had in the past few months.

Thank you for sharing.  My brother was allergic to peanuts as a child.

Peace

too true.
I only remember finding out at about 6 months, when I was in the middle of eating some fantastic brie- my hubby doesn't like it- and being yelled at to stop because it was so dangerous! it really needs to be publicised much more- peanuts are the only food the Aust. government have warned pregnant people not to eat- yet hardly anoyone knows this! I was eating mars bars almost everyday for crying out loud!

Don't panic. As I mentioned in the article it is not yet proven, just a theory but the British government is advising avoiding peanuts if you fit the critieria mentioned in the article.

Try avoiding peanuts in a Thai restaurant- the lemongrass chicken has peanut sauce!

peanut.
i have a list of mild food allergies which bring me out in only exezma chocolate, egg, yeast etc.. I eat and ate these foods during pregnancy my child has no know allergy to bread, or egg in fact he loves egg I agree with peanuts tho as although myself and partner can eat peanuts my mother will go into anaflactic shock ( she found out the hard way too ). I think its personl choice if a parent eg the father has a very bad reaction to a certain food eg shellfish I personally would avoid this during pregnancy as bub may be directly affected, eating it and thinking it will cure bub as the mother is not allergic might not be the case.

Sometimes I wonder if the foods we avoid are the cause why there are more allergies in kids these days, I ate as normal when I was pregnant except I was careful with some seafoods and my kids have no allergies.  One of my sister in laws was anal about what she put in her mouth when pregnant and her kids have allergies with just about everything.  I think things eaten in moderation would surely help produce the antibodies against these things.  Its the same with germs, we are so busy cleaning and disinfecting everything that our childrens bodies dont have a chance to build a natural immunity.

I agree that with germs it is good to get exposure to build up resistance and you would have thought it would be that way with allergies, but apparently not. It actually works the other way. By getting exposed to the allergen you are more likely to develop an allergy to it.

I strongly agree to that. I also read that, and I know that it's not been proven yet, and i'm not blaming myself for my son's peanut allergy, but who knows - it could be that Thai food I had when I was pregnant and all those chocolates... Here! here! avoid peanuts during pregnancy indeed!
