Homework and ADHD

momof2 by momof2 Speaking(September 2006) (rank 500+)
I don't know how many of you out there have children with ADHD?  As for me my daughter(10) has it.  It use to take us about 1 1/2 hours to do one lesson.  She would scream, cry, throw things, anything not to have to do her homework.  I was
so frustrated nothing I tried worked.  Finally I tried homework party's.  I started with my best friends daughter(12) she would come over for a hour a day.  They would go into the study, I would take snacks and drinks in there for them.  They would do their homework together.  I would only go in there if they needed my help.  They usually did not need my help, i made sure they had everthing they needed in there.  Pens, pencils, markers, Dictionary, encyclopedia's, magazines, old newspapers, and the computer.  Now there is usually 8-12 girls at my house dailey.  We (myself and the other parents) take turns suppling the snacks.  We all make sure to keep old magazines and newspapers.  We buy different supplies when we are out shopping if they are on sale, so that the girls always have plenty of everthing they need.  And so that we don't have to run out to the store and pick up supplies for different projects.  At this age my daughter needs usually about 5 posterboards a semester.  And all the supplies it takes to make the posterboard for a project.  And since we started the homework parties my daughters grades have came up, as has the other girls.  ALL the girls have a great time, while they are learning.  Hope some of you can use this idea.  It worked wonders for us.

Can you be my mum?
I would have loved to do this.  I shall certainly bear it in mind for when we start having homework.  Thanks for the tip
Peace

excellent homework party!!
That's an excellent idea. Who knew that a homework party would be cool! I don't have ADHD but I was always struggling with math and english. If my parents would of known that when I was going through school, that would of made a difference that's for sure!

Homework and ADHD
What a wonderful idea.  Three of my 5 children are ADHD and 2 are ADD.  I wish I had heard of this when the older children were younger.  I now just have 14 yr old and 9 year old at home.  Both have just started new schools but I will see if I can try this out once they start making some friends.
