Nappy Bag Essentials

michellei by michellei Talking Back(September 2006) (rank 45th)

I see so many mothers carrying around such large nappy bags and why?

My advice is as follows……….

  1. Take a spare change of clothes for bubs.
  2. Enough nappies to last a couple of hours (depending on age – I only
take two) TOP TIP: If you use disposable bags to put the used nappies in, use the bag to tie a loose knot around its self and then put the bag inside the nappy.
  3. A water bottle. One for mum as well!!
  4. A sun hat and small tube of sun screen.
  5. Small container of snacks.
  6. A small wrap/bunny rug/blanket.
  7. Water bottle to make up formula and a formula dispenser.

That is really all you need for bubs. I used to carry around so much stuff in one of those cute matching nappy bags, but at the end of the day I didn’t use half the stuff I had in there.

I have a cute little funky toiletry wet pack and in that I store my diary, mobile phone, purse, spare dummy, pads/tampons/breast pads. Olivia hasn’t worked out how to open zips yet so it will be a while before she gets into ‘my stuff’.

All this fits into my bag which is about 30 cm high x 40cm wide, with room to spare - unless we have to take the teddies, lol!!

Nappy bag contents

I know about the big bag thing! I've still got them, i then bought a backpack and it's great too! But, i got a steelcraft jogging pram and it has a compartment in the back that holds 2 bottle a couple of nappies, huggies wipes container, spare clothes, hat, some chewy toys, rusk sticks and panadol, and even a drink for mum and bubs and the kids. Under the pram is also handy for the the older kids things!

I usually take the pram EVERYWHERE, so no need for a seperate bag! I hardly ever use a nappy bag!

My contents...

I have a small back pack nappy bag, and it is brillant.. And once he grows up and no longer in need I can keep using it if by any chance it has survived all that time....

1. Five nappies (diapers)

2. Baby wipes (I have a small huggys container that always has enough for the time out) You can buy them for 2$ at the phamacy and just keep topping them up when you need them.

3. Change mat./diaper cream

4.change of clothes,

5. hat and sun screen.

6.Bottle or sippy cup depending if we are going to be out long enough for him to have his milk.

And yep I learnt that the hard way... I had a cute matching bag and filled it to the gills full of stuff.. This that and other useless things. So i decided to buy a smaller bag..  And in buying the smaller bag I worked out that I really did not need all his other stuff.... :)

7. one book or toy

My contents...

I treated myself to a 'camelbak' in the end.  Something that had a place to store my bottle and hers (in the front pocket there are little net things to store them).  I never did handbags y'see.  Lippy and money in front pocket of jeans, phone in back pocket and keys wherever they fitted.  Now I have this child with so much to carry for - I quickly cut it down to size!

I still carry the same camelbak even though she is older, the bottles of water we carry are bigger now, and it is a change of trousers in case the heavens open before we arrive at our destination instead of the nappy - but the wipes are still indispensible.  And i usually have an activity for her and one for me, so that when we are travelling on bus or train for more than 5 mins we can have something to do other than play 'i spy' out the window.

Peace

I remember
I remember with my first child, I used to go overboard with the nappy bag, I would be going around to mums for a few hours and would take everything he needed for a month.... now its a couple of nappies, wipes, change of clothes and a snack bag for my eldest two, and that all fits in my bag, the large nappy bag stays in the cupboard.  To think I used to make my hubby carry that heavy bag around lol.

Less is best!
I know what you mean! I have so many nappy bags - so big and bulky. I think we can learn from my hubby who takes a nappy and he's off!
I used to take a nappy bag in the pram with so many things and end up using little of its contents if anything. My biggest problem was trying to find something down the bottom of the bag!
Now i take a open bag with a couple of nappies, wipes and a change of clothes.

Good advice!

That's true, I like your advice! Incase baby is sick, make sure to put in tylenol or tempra in the bag as well!

I have a diaper bag, that goes over my shoulder. It kinda looks like a backpack, but it's not. It works great. It got a compartment for the bottle and it keeps it cold, or if it's hot it keeps it hot. 2 pouch's in the front, one is for her pacifier(which she does not use) and another part is for the wipes. There is even a zipper on the bottom and it opens up, so that's where the diaper's go! On the side of the bag, it has an opening and that's where i put extra pair of clothes and whatever else I think I might need. It really works out and it's better than the one's that are out there. Some of them look like they are duffle bags lol. Toooo big!!

Silly me fogot to add wipes.

Thanks for the reminder - they are the must have essential, I think my world would stop if we didn't have those
