Less Soft Drinks More Water To Keep Your Young Ones Healthy

cleannut by cleannut Talking Back(September 2006) (rank 306th)

Softdrinks  have caffeine making kids bounce off walls. Too much juice exspecially apple orange can make teeth decay faster. Getting them to drink water is healthy but hard to convince them to drink. From 2yrs old  to 10 yrs old i filled water jug up and put in fridge.

My kids loved the super heros on tv so . That wasn't water in my fridge that was magic h2o. Sometimes i added food coloring to the water and that was now the super h20.  Id fill a couple ice cube trays with a rainbor of food colored water and freeze it.  They got even more super powers when they added the icecube to their h20 in fridge.  Even their friends would come over and ask for some of that magic h20.

It works or at least it did for me and all my kids friends,

Re: Less Soft Drinks More Water To Keep Your Young Ones Healthy

Caffeine is not found in ALL softdrinks, however it is found in some.  What you will find in MOST softdrinks is an abundance of sugar and other preservatives that may have an adverse affect on your child's behaviour and health.

Excess juice will cause tooth decay if your kids don't clean their teeth regularly; the main concern is the high concentration of natural sugars found in fruit juice in comparison to the equivalent amount of fruit; this again can cause adverse hyper behaviour in your child.  If you give your kids juice as a treat, it is best to water it down 50/50 or even more, most kids are quite happy to drink it like that.

Teaching your kids about the importance of drinking a healthy amount of water is very wise; you shouldn't need to colour it or tell them it is magic as they really need to be aware of what is healthy for them to drink and eat.  Encouraging healthy choices for the right reasons will enable children to make wise decisions about their diet, these choices will help them to become strong healthy adults.  The best way to do this is by being a responsible role model and practising what you preach.

Water is so important it seems to get overlooked  I put a jug on the bench and make sure I drink the required amount a day and I find I don't want softdrinks and have cut back on my coffee and tea intake.

Re: Less Soft Drinks More Water To Keep Your Young Ones Healthy
Some soft drinks contain caffeine, not all soft drinks.  Young children do not need fruit juice, natural fruit juice has a very high sugar content.  They should get enough juice and vitamins from their daily fruit intake.

You will find that any child/person will drink water when they are thirsty and they aren't given other options - it is best to have it readily available so they can help themselves at any time.

my daughter regularly asks for a "drink of waller (water)"
She does drink OJ and AJ but in moderation! If me and my parter are having a drink of coke....i allow her to have a couple of sips or i give her some watered down!
I dont think large amounts of sweet drinks are good for them!
Cheers.

water

we recently dicovered the reason why two of our  three kids were bouncing off the walls. We were giving them weak cordial to drink, now we give them the concentrated juice that has to be mixed with water, they wont drink plain or coloured water and they are too much of a wake up to our tricks.  My 14 month old son refuses to drink water because it is tasteless. In my previous relationship my daughter was exactly the same as my son when it came to drinking and eating.

All i say is that if it works then go for it.

Diet Soda
I totally agree with the no soda...and definitely not diet soda!!  There has been a a lot of debate on the effects of the Aspertame in diet soda.  My sis is a RN and advises against diet soda.  She allows her children soda every now and then, but only as a treat!  I did a search on the internet and found some interesting things.  Too much to try and post.  Just search for:  diet soda and children
We do not keep soda in the house and hopefully that will reflect in Alexa's consumption too!
As for juice: I buy only 100% juice for the whole family and Alexa gets her watered down.

Diet Soda
phenylalanine (in Aspertame) causes tumors.

Re: Diet Soda
Phenylalanine is an amino acid, you will find it in protein rich foods, such as meat, fish, dairy products and beans.  Some people with a very rare congenital condition may have a reaction to it.  This is one of many articles that provides evidence to bust this myth.

Not all artificial sweeteners contain aspartame, so it is ill advised to put a blanket bad rap on artificial sweeteners.  Also, for some people, they have no choice about what they can use as a sweetener.

No Soft Drinks

Definitely no soft drinks for my boys.  They have always been given water and ask for water...they have one cup of OJ or apple juice at breakfast, soy milk at lunch and dinner and the remainder of the day water, water, water.

Parents, same goes for you.  Drink your water.

No soft drinks
My boys drink water and milk. No flavour in either. If they are lucky they might have a glass of OJ or Breakky Juice.....

not the fizzy drinks
I wont let Breanna have any more than one drink of cordial a day and this is basically only water with a few drops of cordial in it.I make sure she has continual access to water at all times.Love your ideas though regards Merle

water

Good idea.

I only want to add that, we, as parents should start getting kids into the habit of drinking water at a very young age. I introduced juice to my son at about 10 months old and just stopped it all together. It's really empty calories and not worth it as a source of vitamin c. So from then on, I just gave my son water. He is now 19 months and just loves water.

water

LIam drinks water, but when he has his fruit juice i buy the diluted ones from the baby section of the supermsrket.

The food colouring idea was good- but kind of nasty chemicals are in the food colouring?

Re: water
Rather than buy diluted baby juice for the same price as normal juice - buy normal juice and dilute it yourself - it will save you a lot of money.

No problems here
My daughter loves her water. She has all the juices too, but are fresh as as my parents have orange, apple, lemon tree, so i make juice that way. Nothing beats something fresh.

water.......

my son drinks a lot of water and even when I give him juice, I water it down.... My hubby did it and so I just followed suit.. It is the sugar content and until I can make brushing my sons teeth easier then maybe he can have straight juice....   But he will always prefer water which I am greatful for.

As for my 10 year old step daughter she only gets soft drink on rare occations and even when she does get it it is always a small one and usually in what we call a tasse magic... It makes things into slushies....

Water
I have never given my kids anything but water, when they drink juice I always juice it myself, or I buy only 100% fruit juice.  I thinks its the juice drinks that are not 100% and full of sugar that are the ones that cause decay.

Why yell?
I don't like to buy soft drinks. I am on a health kick and found I am losing weight. I think water is the best drink for anyone to drink especially growing children
