Dress to Kill - Part I

savvy by savvy Crawling(March 2006) (rank 500+)

Call me vain......but a certain degree of stress has been building as the weeks progress and the number of outfits in my wardrobe that fit decreases.  Fortunately I have had the odd weight flucuation in the past (and perhaps inappropriate purchase) so I do have some larger clothes that have

kept me going.

I am 18 weeks pregnant and today anxiously but inevitably bought my first pair of maternity 'pants' (I'm Australian therefore 'pants' = trousers).  I must say I was somewhat relieved when the plastic bag I received with my new purchase in didn't possess a logo or shop name.  Although it will be fairly obvious that I'm pregnant in no time, one does appreciate not being prematurely branded with 'I have an enormous stomach and can't fit into my pants' logo.  The shop didn't exactly have a funky feel as a designer shop might with thumping music etc. however I must say the service was excellent.  As a designer shop would, I was told how tiny I was (a couple of times) and of course how great I looked.  Fortunately I'm over my morning sickness/grumpiness, so I believed them.

Now I am the proud owner of a funky, versatile pair of black trousers (with room to grow) and can say I feel a little more at ease with the fact that I'm not going to wake up one morning for work, with an important meeting scheduled and have nothing to wear.  I will team them with suit jackets, bright shirts and under dresses (for that Sari look).  They will also double up as evening wear with the right top.  Fortunately there are plenty of pregnant women out there with style, and I already have a few other ideas for outfits.  Flicking through magazines has been good for ideas as well.

That pretty much has work sorted out and in a few weeks I will go back for another shop and buy those maternity jeans.  They look far more attractive and comfortable than the extenders that you can apparently buy to attach to your regular jeans.  In the meantime (although not for much longer), I have been getting away with wearing my regular jeans with the top couple of buttons undone.  This is then hidden by a wide belt of mine which I have on the last hole.  So far so good.  A friend did suggest an elastic band on the button and through the button hole suffices, but I don't feel completely at one with that idea.

Conclusion:

'Must have' maternity clothing item = Black trousers

My purchase was from 'Mother and Me' - Murray Street, Perth, Australia

Aus$89.95

(Is that too much to pay??  With the number of times I plan to wear them, I don't think so and I'm fairly confident my husband won't discover this article anyway!)

Regards

Savvy

The best maternaty item I bought
was a belly belt. Not the ones that extend your old pants, but the thick elasticised band u wear under your ever shrinking tops, to give your old favourite top that two layered look. Theyre great for wearing with your old fave jeans so that you can leave the button undone, as you cant see it and the belt holds up your pants as well. If you havent got one already, try ebay, thats where i got mine. I think I got 3 for $15 or something, and you can choose which colours you want.

Clothes
I was very lucky when i was pregnant. I didn't start to show till about 16-17 weeks. And even when i was ready to have my kids i was still able to get away with wearing a size 12-14 (aus) normally i'm a size 6-8. I found that maternity clothes were just so expensive, for the amount of time you would wear them. Even being so small, my first was 8lbs 6 1/2 ozs, and number 2, was 8lbs 2oz. But now i have a lot of large clothes that are not doing anything but taking up space. After having my kids i snapped back to my original size. Very lucky. Yes i know, there are names for people like me!

Got away with HIS pants
When I was pregnant I was working and had a uniform, provided as I grew!!!  I was working so many hours that I was rarely out of my uniform, so i was fortunate to get away with wearing HIS pants (Jeans) when we went out - which was only a few times in the last days.  I just worked far too much - not next time.  I intend to 1)have some special clothes for my maternity wear and 2)take as long as i can off...i can dream right??? ...lol
Peace

All the stars tell us this is so! ;)

Congrats on the pregnancy. I remember when my wife first started buying her maternity pants... she bought the ones that fit the best at the time... it wasnt long before we were buying many more as she expended past the limits of the first few pairs! :)

If you live in Perth - Western Australia - I have heard that the following shop is great for pregnant mums... http://www.aurapsm.com.au
