Family Fitness--Raising The Fitness Bar

Neeters by Neeters Talking(September 2006) (rank 500+)

As parents we often find it difficult to find the time for our own fitness needs.  Quite often the parent is so busy that they have little or no time to focus on their own fitness needs, and with the obesity epidemic reaching monumental proportions in both adults AND children

it is more important than ever to put family fitness on the front burner.    As a busy working parent I try to make fitness a part of each day.

Some suggestions to get the family moving.

DANCE DANCE DANCE--  I turn on the radio, and start dancing.  Quite often even my husband will join in the fun, which gets our daughter even more excited to move and groove.

FAMILY SWIM-  What a great way to pass the time.  Splashing together in the local pool.

WALKING TO..... Wherever.  Leave the car keys at home and take the old Heel toe Express.  Kids still too young for a long walk.  Invest in a wagon for when they get tired.  Make a special stop at the local park where they can run free.  Pack a picnic lunch and a frisbee.

PUT YOUR SILLY HAT ON--  Nothing burns more calories than a good old fashioned silly fest.  Take the cushions off the couch and jump on them.  Roll around on the floor.  Have a sock fight!

PARK FURTHER AWAY-- Providing the weather is nice, there should be nothing stopping you from taking those few extra steps into the store.  Think of all the time you've saved on driving around looking for the closest space.

BE A KID AGAIN-- Every now and then, turn off that cell phone, and be unreachable.  Live carefree and on no one else's timetable.

GROCERY SHOP AS A FAMILY-- take time to learn about healthy choices as a family.  Teach your kids to read labels.

PLANT A GARDEN-- Let the kids pick a vegetable to grow and have them plant and tend to the plants.  They may even like to eat the vegetables of their labours.

GO FLY A KITE---nuff said

PLAY TWISTER-  Not only is it a great flexibilty game, but a great family bonding game too.

Most importantly  Have FUN!!

fitness

I agree, there are many things you can do that arent a chore! My husband and i were going for an hour and a half walk everymorning- lovely for us, but liam just slept so it wasnt much fun for him.  we also work out 3/4 times aweek. (just in our garage)  also not much fun for liam.  but when we ditched the walks for 3 days in the pool- well that made it a lot better for him. now he bashes on the bath to play with the water, he sometimes site at the back door trying to get out to the pool too.  my husband swims a bout a kilometere everytime, and i swim as far as i can before liam gets too cold to stay in the pool (usually about 500m)

Not always gym
I agree. There are a lot of things we could do to get fit, not always need the gym. The walk to the shop, the run in the park, the dance, the family swim, ride the bike, etc, etc. I even able to spend time 5 - 10 minutes after shower to do some stretching and basic aerobic in the bedroom, sometime the kids doing it with me. Put the music on and get fit and fun.

Great advice- encourage good habits early
We live about a 25 minute walk from town. I have my name down at a second hand pram shop to get a fully reversible pram so I am more likely to walk. I figure that being able to talk to and see my child (rather than both of us staring off into space) will make me more likely to walk rather than take the car. Thats the plan. Lets hope it works.
