Do I really need that?

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 10th)

I am trying to declutter the spare room so I can set it up for the baby. Unfortunately I have a lot of stuff. Much of it not used for ages and some of it never used. I spent money on this stuff ! Money I could have used to reduce the mortgage or go on a holiday! And now this stuff is cluttering up my house! and costing even more money because we are building a shed to store it. (shed will also be used as a workshop for my husband)

Now when I go to the shops before I buy something (no matter how cheap it is) I ask myself "Do I really need that?" or as my husband says "Is it a require or a desire?"

What do we really need??
Since i have had kids my priorities are different. I had collections of stuff from when i was single and they don't mean anything to me today. I try to instill that into my husband my he insists on keeping everything from his past. Our crawl space is more full with his stuff than with kid stuff. Stuff that he could sell and get good money for. If he won't put it on display somewhere then it is not worth anything. Christmas gifts and birthday gifts for ourselves are things that we really need or can use. I look at things differently. What do i really need it for?? Even the kids stuff we don't buy many toys we put more money into their education accounts.

Long term
When I'd like to buy something, I always think whether I would use it long term or just once, whether it is urgently need or not, etc, etc. It is really good to ask yourself rather buy just because your eyes like it and you never use it at the end. Like you said, you can use the money for something more important....and you have tidier house.

purging
I feel the same way..my daughter is now 1 year, and we have so much stuff accumulated...not just things we bought, but honestly, the majority is from people who gave our daughter things as gifts!  Surely there are things that I feel as if I cannot let go of (going home outfits, favorite hats etc), and I keep those, but things she's not using anymore-walker, exersaucer, etc. ....those are going to get Garage Saled!  I've also posted some things for sale online on Connectingmoms 'Yard Sale', that way I can get give moms some things for far cheaper than stores, but get a little back :)

Waste
Totally.... I have heaps of stuff here that should be gotten rid of, but I always find myself asking the question will I use it later????? But I figured if I have not used it with in the year then really it should go. I have lots of stuff back at my parents place in AUstralia that I have requested to them to get rid of.. Don't tell me what it is if I don't know I won't miss it.   The last thing I need is to retrieve all my stuff from AUstralia only to have it clutter the house.. Yes we spend money on these things but if they are still good sell them, you might not make up the money you spent on them but something is better then nothing.

Waste
I agree! My wife and I have so much spare stuff in our house that just sits there...like a tent we bought when we got married. We haven't used it, and when we went to get it out for the first time, parts were missing! Frustrating!

Getting rid of stuff

Don't  you hate it when you find stuff that you haven't used in a long time? I have that problem too. I have so much stuff to get rid of. I had a garage sale but I still have lots of stuff left. Bird cages, kids clothes. toys etc.. You name it I probally have it. LOL. If  the stuff doesn't get sold at our garage sale this weekend, I am going to donate it all. But it soo sad that I can't make some money off of it to put away for the family.

Have to remeber that rule, it would probally do me some good. LOL

Car boot sale.

I really think you shud have a car-boot sale, that way you can make money on all this stuff you dont use or seem to need and you can also save your space in the shed.you could put the money in a savings account 4 your kids,or save 4 that holiday.

That is what I am working on
Do I really need that? Nah! Probably not! I am spring cleaning now and I am having to be realistic about what to keep as we just don't have the room for it all.
