A way of making learning times tables fun

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 15th)

When my youngest brother  Chris(19 years younger) was learning his times tables we used to play table tennis together. When one of us missed the ball or lost the shot we would say a line of the times table Chris was working on at the time eg 3 x 6

is 18. After a while instead of just saying one line I would rattle off the times table. I didn't pressure Chris to do the same but as he got more confident he too would rattle off the whole times table too. Maths was one of Chris's favourite subjects all through school and he is now studying business at Uni. His love of maths should come in handy there.

I think this fun way of drilling times tables would work for other things that kids need to rote learn like capital cities or chemistry valancies.

Re: A way of making learning times tables fun
Great idea. In primary school we used to play a game called tables king and queen and we would line up and compete against our class mates. Last one standing was the king or queen for the day and had our name on the board. We would practice very hard to get that honour, and I thought it was a great game. I would even practice the game at home with my brother or friends that visited, and we got very fast. Still know my tables because of it.

competition

we used to time ourselves on how long it took as to say them all correctly then would check to see who had the best time

it was the competition that made us want to learn them properly

Making it fun

Yeah, i was going to suggest playing a game while learning the time's tables or singing them. But what you did with your younger brother is also a good idea

Great Idea

Having fun while learning. Great idea.  I used an old shower curtain and wrote all the #'s from 1to 100 and questioned her that way. It helped since she was wanted to move around when it came to math. Sometimes I would get her to jump the answer to the question. Sometimes it takes something fun for  them to get better. It helped my daughter out soo much. Although it seems so goofy.
