Hospital Bag

allyp by allyp Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 6th)

Getting ready for the big day? And getting very excited. Make sure that you have your hospital bag ready with everything in it. Also a bag for your baby.

These bags should include :

Moms Hospital bag:

  • Bring a few maternity bras if you are planning
on breastfeeding (why a few, well incase one gets dirty you have another)
  • Extra pair of maternity clothes to go home in (your original clothes that you wore before being pregnant might still be too tight)
  • Few extra pair of underwear, all depends on how long you're going to be in the hospital for!
  • Maxi pads
  • Towels to dry yourself off, after you get out of the shower (if you dont like to use hospital
  • Loose fitting nightgown or PJS (i had one and they worked great, from Thyme Maternity)
  • Socks, Slippers and a robe
  • Something to look at, for a vocial point
  • Magizenes to read
  • Soap, Shampoo, Toothpaste, Toothbrush and lets not forget your hair brush.
  • Also maybe bring something to put your hair up (if it's able to be put up to get out of your face)

Babys Bag:

  • Diapers, possibly newborns (to be on the safe side bring size 1 with you as well)
  • Sleepers (a few)
  • Diaper shirts (a few)
  • An outfit to bring your bundle of joy home in
  • Recieving blankets (they are good for swaddling and for then burping baby, expecially if there is spit up along with it! I use them and, I tell you they work like a charm)
  • Soother/Pacifier
  • Diaper rash cream (like Penaten, vasiline, etc.. canada is different from the US or anywhere else)
  • Scratch mittens (so that they don't scratch their face)
  • A pair of little socks
  • Also a warm blanket (for the car ride home, they like to be warm!!)

I think that should be all. From what I remember taking along with me. I didn't really need all of that stuff for the babys bag, like the rash cream or the socks. But I put them in there just incase. You can never be sure. I might be forgetting a few thing's to put in both bags. But those are the most important!

Also please remember to have a CAR SEAT to bring the baby home in. They usually do not let you leave the hospital unless you have one.

another thing i would have

is money. it is a long time between when they serve dinner and breakfast! i am usaually hungry again by 8pm, and if the hospital has rules about what times your partner can be there (as mine did, stupid thing!)  they wont always be able to bring you maccas, so you may have to put up with vending achine junk. i also took a few bags of dried fruit in in case i hada long labour. it was short, but served well in between dinner and breakfast!

Spiky balls (tennis balls too, and dog toys!- new of course!!) are great for a massage during a long labour.

Hospital bag

Good advice, one thing my mum brought in for me was make up to go home, I felt and looked shocking and once I had done my hair and put some make up on I felt so much better leaving the hospital.  And the other I thought of was breast pads if your breast feeding.

I wasn't that organised! x3!!!
I was lucky to take a change of clothes - i am terrible. i had to get hubby to bring things for me.
I didn't have to worry about baby. Only had to have a going home outfit and car seat. First baby they had cloth nappies then for my boys they gave out sposies (sponsorship i think). They provided nighties and singlets also as well as cotton balls and wipes etc.

I had to get hubby to bring me things too! I brang the wrong shampoo, silly me. But i'm like that. I will re-pack my things like 100 times before i get it right and make sure everything is there! i think the only time i never had to use my own diapers(that i brought) was when cadence was in the Special Care Unit/ICU. They provided the diapers then and the sleepers/recieving blankets. But as soon as she was in the room with me, i had to provide for everything!!

Sounds good!
I also brought a whole bunch of stuff in the diaper bag for my son, but it turned out we didn't need half of them. The hospital provided us with all the diapers while we were there. They also provided shirts and receiving blanket, as well as the wipes for diaper change. The only thing we needed was the outfit to bring our son in, and a blanket for the carseat (it was March), and of course the CARSEAT! The hospital doesn't let people take their newborns without carseats.

Yes, I forgot to say the wipes.. You defiently need them, expecially if they poop. LOL!

Izzy, you were VERY VERY lucky that the hospital you stayed at gave you diapers, receiving blankets and shirts. WOW!! I wish my hospital did that.

This is kinda funny too.. They didn't have enough room on the labor floor that they had to put me on the next floor down.. Then when Cadence was able to get out of the ICU/Special Care Unit and be in the room with me was when I was able to go back up to the labor floor.. That's CRAZY!!!!!

I think because of the amount of money it cost to give birth here in the U.S., the hospital at leasts gives us whatever the baby needs while in there.

why?

How can someone mark this as average? It's giving advice to mothers to get their hospital bags ready and what should be in them????????????

The only time I think this is good advice and it gets marked down as average.. nice going!

It does get disheartening sometimes doesn't it. I have sometimes posted advice which I consider  to be of good quality and had the same thing (or even lower scores) happen. Not everyone marks fairly. Don't let them get you down.
There are some earlier postings of advice on the hospital bag so maybe that is why the person marked it down.

why?

As disheartening as it is, and yes I feel dissapointed to at times.. But when you look at it when you give it a high score it is written "Worked for me".  Maybe there should be a vote that says, "sounds great I'll try it"'  If they try the advice, and it does work for them then they can come back and change there vote Worked for me...

I understand what you mean though...   But for me personally, I feel I can't say it worked for me until it actually did... And if it does I do come back and change my vote... :)  I feel I too have given some good advice, but it all comes down to it, it is personal opion and what works works for some and not all....

Thats how I look at it anyway, that way I don't get to dissapointed that when I get really excited about giving what I think is fantastic advice, I just keep in the back of my mind that it is not fantastic for all.... :)
