Growing Child with a Sore Leg

family-man by family-man Talking Back(March 2006) (rank 188th)

Children tend not to say things that are not true in this regard. If the child says it has a sore leg it probably has. You need to try and get to the bottom of what the child means. It may be that it is a different ailment each time

and it is described the same way as young ones do not have a full grasp of the language yet. A grazed knee and a cut toe could both be described as a sore leg. If the child has a different explanation and it is a consistent explanantion, Eg my leg is sore here and they point to the same spot on their left shin for a week and it doesnt seem to be getting better and there is no obvious reason as to why it would be sore (ie regularly bumping that part of the leg on their bike whilst learning to ride etc) then you should have it investigated. Whilst some may say that you are being over cautious ask yourself this, If you had a pain in your left shin, in the same spot, it has no reason for being there as far as you can remember ( severely drunk on a Saturday night could be a possible reason) and it is not getting better after a period of two weeks what would you do ?  Your child cannot make the decision for investigation or not, you need to do it for them.

I would explore the possibilities by asking different questions and see if you can identify if it is the same ailment or a series of different day to day happenings in a busy life.(Most likely)  If it is the same ailment and it is not easily explainined, (blisters due to new shoes, learning to ride bikes etc) then I would get it investigated.

Sore Legs

Sounds good!  I agree that to get it checked out if it persists.

investigate
Yes I agree. If they are persisting, it is peace of mind to get it checked out. It could be many things, blood circulation issues, strained muscle or something else.

Add an image
I think adding an image will help the votes of this article.

You can get images from here (as long as you link back to the specific page (in the "external links" area) that you copied the image from)... http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/by-2.0

Once you arrive at http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/by-2.0/ - all you need do is search for relevant words like "toddler" and a whole list of relevant photos will appear.

Here is one that you may want to consider... http://www.flickr.com/photos/makelessnoise/107846054/

Re: Add an image
I realise that the explanation above it a little bit complex. Maybe it would help to look at an example...

See http://www.minti.com/article/159 - in this article Matthew has used a picture from the flickr URL I mention in the comment above and he has linked to the source of the photo in the external links area.

Hope this helps! ;)

Was this in answer to a question?
If it was could you take a guess at re-phrasing the question at the start of th article - we are working on making this easier in future so apologies that the system does not show the question you are answering :)

Re: Was this in answer to a question?
Agree - if this was an article as a result of "requested advice" it would be great if you could add the question at the top of the article.

By the way: I like the advice. It sounds logical that the child will just keep complaining and not take themselves to hospital... parents should take note of what their children are trying to communicate.

Hi Clay and Matthew,

this was an answer to requested infomation however there appeared to be no way of identifying that.

Re: Was this in answer to a question?
Family Man,

Thanks for the "heads up". Currently we hope that members will add the question to the top of their article in some way. We are looking at future enhancements to automate this.
