AUTISM

libbylincoln by libbylincoln Talking Back(September 2006) (rank 68th)

WHAT CAUSES AUTISM? medical eveidence suggests its biological this can include genetic factors, viral infections, birth or pregnacy complications any which can cause brain damage and some assume to produce autism.

OTHER CONDITION WHO HAVE SIMULAR DIAGNOSIS OF AUTISM ARE :

  1. ELECTIVE MUTISM
  2. ATTACHMENT
    DISORDER
  3. LANGUAGE DISORDER
  4. HYPERKINETIC DISORDER
  5. DISINTEGRATIVE DISORDER
  6. MENTAL HANDICAP
  7. RETT'S SYNDROME
  8. LANDAU-KLEFFNER SYNDROME

THE NATURE OF AUTISM

Lack of interest in social interaction is sometimes present even before spech develops, most children look physically normal.

BEHAVIOUR IN BABIES

Feeding problems are fairly common and some babys do not suck well.the majority do not cry to be feed they are placid ,undemanding and could lie in the prams all day.while infants they are named " angel babys" but at times parents worry because they can become very unactive and unsocialble.

they dislike nappy changing  dressing and washing .and they may not lift their arms to be puicked up.

they are facinated by lights shines, and spins.they have an intence interest in televison and music.

babys like to be tickled cudled and bounced but not when looking at someone face.they dont join in by copying parents in games such as peek a boo .

babys with autism still cut their teeth, walk, smile and put on weight normally.

they may not bother to sit up because the world has little interest.they are reluctant to walk without support but there have been some cases where children with autism have been known to crawl or shuffle one minute and suddenly they stood up and walked without any practice.

babys with autism dont really lean out of prams  to look in curiosity at dogs and other children  nor do they try to get mothers attention to something that caught their eye.if any of this behaviour is absent at18 mths it is likelly the child has autism.

there are many groups of autism:

  1. the allof group
  2. the passive group
  3. the active group
  4. the over formal group

Re: AUTISM
My husbands sister has autism, now we are thinking of having a baby he is understandably worried about our child having it too.  Does anyone know what the chances of that would be?

My younger brother was diagnosed with Autism as a young child. (he is 21 now) and it turns out he actually has Aspberger's Syndrome, instead. The characteristics are somewhat simliar, and he carries the typical Genius IQ that goes with it. Aspberger's is more of an emotional disorder, than anyting else, though. Thanks for this. I'm sharing it with a friend of mine, whose son is Autistic. She blames herself for his condition, and it might help her to see that it's not as bad as it could be, truly.

Autism

My son was only diagnosed with Autism a couple of months ago and my Dr told me that they still can't pin point what causes Autism but they are down to 7 chrosomes.Autism falls on a spectrum scale from mild to severe. As a baby my son didn't show any signs of Autism until he was around 3 when he wasn't talking much and liked to line dvds up.

So what you are saying is that only for severe Autism?

Autism

no doctor can really pin point where autism comes from they just say that its normally genetic. i have 4 children and my first son was never diagnosed and he was showing alarming things but i was young  and never new nothing about desabilitys i just thought he was having tantrums the terrible 2's until he was 4 he never spoke and doctors did nothing he is now 10 years old adn seems normal ,when my second son was doing simular things i put my foot down and it took 5 diferent docotors before one took me seriously, about my son i wanted to know what he had i had to help docotors out by doing research myself ,when he was diagnosed they still gave me no proper answers.

autism does fall on  a mild to severe scale but all children are different  i think thats why that scale is used . my daughter she is almost 5 she is showing simular trates but yet doctors keep telling me dont have it just because she dont play with cars back and forth i thought it was silly specially since she isnt speaking nor toilet trained and she still headbuts the walls ,when i ask the doctors for an aswer they have none  i think doctors go to much by the book.

autism is really hard to diagnose i think us mothers just have to really put our foot down and demand an answer once and for all.

In Western Australia to get the diagnosis for Autism you have to see a Developmental Paediatrician,Speech Pathologist and a Clinical Psychologist then the three of them have to all agree that they have sufficient criteria for the diagnosis of Autism.

Its the same in NSW - We had quite a battle to get all of the specialists to agree as we found the line between Autism & Aspergers to be extremely thin. It was a difficult road to travel emotionally & financially but the diagnosis was worth it in the end as we now understand who our little man is;
