Why eat fruit and vegees?

mcm by mcm Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 5th)
Fruit and vegetables contribute to the health, growth and development of children. I think it is very important to encourage good eating habits from an early age. Establishing healthy and balanced eating habits at an early age is important for long term health.

Why should we eat fruit and vegetables? They are a good source of carbohydrates and fibre and are full of vitamins and minerals. This is important for our health and growth. And if you ask me, they taste so good, so why not?

How much is one serve?
FRUIT-
1 medium piece eg. 1 medium apple or 2 small apricots or 1 cup of dried fruit.
VEGETABLES-  1 small potato, or 1/2 cup cooked vegees or 1 cup leafy salad

My girl's school is now implementing a program to promote better health choices in  children. It is important that children eat fruit every day, so the school and a fruit packing company have organised a way to help. Each week the school will receive a box of fruit and every day the children get a piece of fruit. I think this is a great idea and I am grateful for this program. My daughter is even excited about it! It is subsidised so i am paying less for her lunch and I will be less stressed about getting her to eat enough fruit.

Great program idea
Love the idea of school working with the company in this way that they can meet the needs of the children properly - be good if this was more widespread - but who knows, maybe it will catch on....
Peace

I already do this with miss 3. I started her on only healthy food, and now she's 3.6 she loves her fruit and vegetables and healthy drinks too. when she has junk food, which is rare, she know's it's a treat and only when she's been good

You are lucky that your child/rens school is beeing proactive about healthy eating.

Fruit time and veggies
I've been implementing a routine to my kids which is having a fruit time (morning tea) at 10am (mind that my kids love snacking and I schedule it they could only snacking every 2 hours). Apart from that, I love that at my son kindy they also have fruit time. I also happy that when he goes to primary, the school don't serve any fizzy drink at their canteen too. At dinner time, I also serve some veggies (either they'd eat or not, they'll get use to eat veggies. At least I try to make them try to eat them.)

I do the same thing with the routine snacking..   He has two snacks a day, just small ones but it is always fruit...  And he usually has something fruity after he has had his major meals.
