Suggestion for helping sick kids at night breathe a little better

tinker79 by tinker79 Talking Back(September 2006) (rank 99th)

I went to the doctor today to get medication for my kids as they are all sick. The flu like symtoms. Stuffy nose, headaches, chest congestion, sore throats etc. I used the vaporizer in their rooms also.  The Doctor also told me to use Vicks VaporRub and mix it in

with Vaseline before I put it on my children. Also I would start with one place first to see how your child reacts to it. I put it on their throats, back, and their chest. We also got the kids to put a little of the combo around the opening of the nostrils.  The Vaseline is so that the Vick's doesn't really have the sensation of  burning hot feel on  their skin, and so they can still have the smell of the vicks to help them breathe better while they are sleeping.  My grandma also suggested to put some Vicks/Vaseline combo  on their feet, socks over top of it  to keep them warm.  Who would have known that it would have really helped my kids.

Hope this helps someone else out too.

Vaporiser
Hi
Be careful with vaporiser and remember to air the room out well as it can cause mould and this can in turn affect breathing as well
We were actually told not to use the vaporiser for Jalan as it can make the air too moist and cause pnemonia....maybe only with cfers i dont know

Luv Deb

Raise there mattress
Also Raise they heads a bit while they sleep.  Slip a pillow under the mattress.  It helps with the cough and no cough helps them stay asleep.

Some other tips
You can get nasal drops that are just salt water - I have used this on the baby since she was little and it is great.  I also use a home made infusion of rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus with oil and I am about to add hyssop (which I've not used before).  You can burn it or massage it on your chest or put it in hot water and breathe it in.  Although do not use rosemary if you are pregnant.  There is also a company called Healing Hippo in Australia that has a range of aromatherapy products, including one for colds.  This may be easier than making your own.

PS
Forgot to add a vaporiser is good for adding warm moisture to the air which can help stuffiness but make sure it is well out of reach as they burn when tipped over!!!

Can't use vicks on babys

I love using vicks.. But I was told not to use it on the baby.. I have been looking around for stuff that I can use for the baby but I haven't been soo lucky! So for the next time she gets sick, I will try the vaseline(i have so much of that, as I got it from the baby shower my mom held for me)

Another tip.. If you are pregnant you can't use vicks vapor rub either.. I needed it real bad when I was pregnant and couldn't use it. It's a decongestant and it causes you to breath faster which pumps more blood and it could be bad for the baby! My doctor and Pharmisist(SP?) told me that because she was too pregnant!

baby vicks
I use baby vicks for my little ones, cause it's not as hot as the normal one. It does help them breathing when they had flu. I did this because I remember my mum used to do that to me when I was little, but back then we only use the normal one. Other thing that Vicks can do to you, moist your dry feet.

Sonething else to try (no medication required!)
I also find raising the bed at head end.  I put a block under each leg (a brick would be sufficient or something similar)  It raises the head end and helps keep them from being all stuffed up.  My kids sleep much more peacefully when they have colds.  When yu first put them on it looks as though their bed is raised too uch but lie down on it and it isn't much at all.  i have specially made blocks (given to me by my father) I will try and find out where he got them but as I said any block about brick height will do.  I have them under harry's cot at the moment.  NO MEDICATION required, try it first or as well as!

help breathing
I have this stuff by johnson and Johnson and it is a vapor cream for babys.  It isn't harsh like vicks because it is a cream.  Also put something under the mattress to lift there head a bit.  It helps with the coughing if they have one.

Skin Issues
My oldest has hypersensitive skin, so this really helped the medication do it's job, without him being in pain.

Yup yup!
My grandparents began this with my Dad and his siblings, then he passed it on to all of us. Now, when my son gets sick, the first thing he asks for is the Vick's. *smile* I'm glad that you were able to find some relief for your children. I do hope they feel much better, soon.
