Potty training a 19 month old who is really doing it on his own |

My son woke up and decided that he no longer wanted to wear a diaper. I kind of understand this, since I really don't want to wear a bra. However sometimes (or a lot of the time) we find ourselves doing things in life that we don't want to
do. When he started this, I asked him if maybe he wanted to use the "big boy potty."
"Os." Os is the new "yes." With that I helped him up and he went to the bathroom on his own. The child is fearless. When I relayed this to my mother, she expressed concern that he was too young. As I tell more people, I hear the resounding "he is too young." But my only other option is a child who runs around with his diaper in his hand. A skill he has perfected so that he can get it off under the most trying circumstances, to include from underneath overalls or when secured with packing tape. Hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.
Today he went 6 1/2 hours without one accident. We were slightly hindered by a trip out of the house, but I am thinking that is pretty darn good for my little baby. And if he wants to be potty trained, who am I to argue? Sometimes it's not bad to go against convention. Every child is unique, right?
I think that the most important thing to focus on is consistency. That and positive reinforcement. Every time he is "successful" we both clap our hands and yell loudly. His yell is even louder than mine. I think that with potty training he is developing an autonomy and the self confidence of being a "big boy." Just in time to go from "big boy" to "big brother."
