Potty training a 19 month old who is really doing it on his own

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(September 2006) (rank 5th)

My son woke up and decided that he no longer wanted to wear a diaper.  I kind of understand this, since I really don't want to wear a bra.  However sometimes (or a lot of the time) we find ourselves doing things in life that we don't want to

do.  When he started this, I asked him if maybe he wanted to use the "big boy potty."

"Os."  Os is the new "yes."  With that I helped him up and he went to the bathroom on his own.  The child is fearless.  When I relayed this to my mother, she expressed concern that he was too young.  As I tell more people, I hear the resounding "he is too young."  But my only other option is a child who runs around with his diaper in his hand.  A skill he has perfected so that he can get it off under the most trying circumstances, to include from underneath overalls or when secured with packing tape.  Hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Today he went 6 1/2 hours without one accident.  We were slightly hindered by a trip out of the house, but I am thinking that is pretty darn good for my little baby.  And if he wants to be potty trained, who am I to argue?  Sometimes it's not bad to go against convention.  Every child is unique, right?

I think that the most important thing to focus on is consistency.  That and positive reinforcement.  Every time he is "successful" we both clap our hands and yell loudly.  His yell is even louder than mine.  I think that with potty training he is developing an autonomy and the self confidence of being a "big boy."  Just in time to go from "big boy" to "big brother."

Great advice my daughter is the same she wont keep that nappy on as soon as i put her trousers on her trousers are off on their way to the washing basket and then for the nappy i even tried putting pull ups on her so she could go on the potty if she wanted but she sussed they just pull down its even easier for her although she does have a nappy when we go out and at bedtime but the time weare at home she now wears knickers and she uses the potty on her own it hink she loves all the praise she gets she likes to call herself clever

No more nappy mummy!
My daughter was the same- the only time she would consent to a nappy was when "poo's are coming mummy!" or when having a sleep. By 18 months we were down to 3 nappies a day! They know what they want and if they experience lots of positives for their achievements, there is no holding them back!  The only set back we had was when her toilet seat slipped and she though she was going to fall in!

when the time is right
if he wants to do it now let him for sure! there is no medical or developmental reason to make him wait!

What a clever little cherub
My daughter trained herself by the time she was 18 months. We just kept the potty out near the toilet from when she could star t walking and the rest she worked out. I then used to take the potty with us when we went out.  Definitely not too young. What is he missing out on? A big heavy bulging nappy. Yeap, he made a good choice.

if he's ready - his age doesn't count, it's his head and his emotions that do! GOOD JOB!

Early Potty Training
Good for him!!!! If he wants to go on the potty then i think it is great. I can only hope that my boys are ready to go on the potty soon!!(they are 16 months). My nieces were both potty trained at 18 mos. It can be done.

Elimination communication.
Consistency and positive reinforcement are great tools.
I think it is great that your child is ready to be nappy free. That is excellent! Well done for him.
What did they do before nappies were invented? It is possible that babies don't need them so I don't think 19mths is too young at all. I wouldn't want to sit in my mess either.

I would like to keep my baby nappy free as much as possible - will see how we go...
