Was Mom on the ball or handing you a line?

Neeters by Neeters Talking(September 2006) (rank 500+)

Remember when you were a kid, and your mother used to tell you to eat your carrots if you want to see in the dark?  Eat your fish because it's brain food?  Ever wonder if she was just handing you a line?

Chances are probably

not.

Eat your Carrots---they'll help you see in the dark.

Most of us already know that carrots contain vitamins, but they also contain an essential vitaimin called Beta-carotene, which is a precursor for Vitamin A.  Vitamin A is an essential component for vision, hence the reasoning behind eat your carrots.  But not just your carrots,  Beta-carotene can be found in other vegetables such as sweet potatoes and squash, as well as broccoli, asparagus and watermelon to name a few.

Is fish really BRAIN FOOD?

Yes it is.  you mother was bang on about this nutrtional powerhouse also.  Fish is packed with essential fatty acids  (EFA's) that your body requires for healthy brain function.  In fact it is recommend by some doctors that women in their last trimester of pregnancy take an essential fatty acid supplement to help the young babe's brain development which mainly takes place in the last 3 months of pregnancy!  Eating fish does work, but pregnant women need to be wary as some fish may have mercury in them, so a supplement can be a great way to go.

Other great sources of EFA's can be found in flax seed, and  Borage oil.  It is recommended that everyone take an EFA supplement as  your body is unable to produce EFA's on it's own.

Fish such as Salmon and Mackeral are packed with EFA's so yes your mom was right about this also.

Fish during pregnancy
These are great points!  I love fish but as a pregnant woman, my doctor seems to be wary of the mercury.  Supplements don't taste as good as a tuna steak.

Great Article
There is an ad in the UK for 'green gaint sweetcorn'  The basis line of the advert is that you are what you eat, so you eat the sweetcorn and you become big and strong like the green giant.  Would be great if smarties provided the smarts we all long for aye....LOL....If only....
Seems your daughter has the smarts already...
Peace

You can also get your EFA's by taking a supplement, or by switching to flax bread>  Walnuts are also great (provided you have no allergies.

You can buy flax bread in the supermarket.  Try looking for DEMPSTER's Whole Grain Flax.  You can also find it in the organic sections of specialty stores.  Luckily you can take EFA-s as a supplement.  Head out to your local shoppers drug mart and ask the pharmacist.
